I have been sewing off and on for the last 40 years. I have had several different Singer sewing machines. I have never had any problem with them. I used them until something broke and it was cheaper to replace. The Brilliance 6199 is the most I have paid for a Singer and it is the worst sewing machine I have ever had. Right from the start it has been am unpleasant experience using it. I knew there would be a learning curve when going to an electronic machine but, I have followed the directions in the manual for everything I have attempted to do. It jams up constantly. It doesn't like sewing thicker material. I just tried to sew a buttonhole following the directions in the manual and it jammed up. I have had it with this sewing machine. I will replace it with a cheaper model that I can still do all the same things on without the stress.
I was very excited to get this machine as I'd had a very basic brother machine previously. While it worked, it was a great little machine, but overall not worth what I paid for it considering I only got a little more than a years worth of use out of it. The bobbin gave me much difficulty that I never experienced with the brother. I don't think it was threading the bobbin evenly and I ended up tearing out a lot of jumbled up thread. The "automatic" threader stopped working after I had owned it for a mere 13 months! Which meant that I couldn't use my warranty. Then the needles started breaking. I now can't use the machine at all with all these problems and feel that it'd probably be cheaper to go and buy a new machine than waste another cent on this one. I was very disappointed to say the least!
Received this sewing machine as gift for my second residence, which means I had to wait several months before I could try it. Now totally excited to start using it......it appears that the pressure foot doesn't touch the dog feeds. I can only use this machine if I fold my fabric 4 times, and then it is perfect ?!?!? Customer Service tells me to send it back to Service Center (out of state) to have the warranty work. Postage with insurance would cost more than a new machine...which leaves me very disappointed.
I have found this machine to be great for begginer's and experiance sewer's. I would recommend this machine to anyone. It is easy to leasrn and comes with all the basic feet and expansion tables with out haveing to spend extra money. The stich selection is great and fun to use as well.
This was a Christmas gift and I have really come to start knowing my machine. It is easy to use. I am an strong believer in the thought that you really should read the directions before you use it. I was a bit wary of some of the reviews but have no complaints at this poing. It was a bit of a change for me from the 22 year old machine I was using. It is a great first sewing machine- it comes with well stocked start-up set (accessories) and is a good value. I know many seaasoned sewers may find the machine as a nuisance. But for a novice to intermediate sewer it is great. My fave aspects are the automatic needle threader, the reverse function (which takes a bit of getting used to) and the variety of stitches is a plus. I love my machine.
