I purchased and received my GP15500 EFI on July 11, 2023. I purchased the unit to supply supplemental power to my home, as we experience frequent multi-day power outages due to severe weather. As of yesterday, 07/29/23, we were subject to severe weather and lost power. I fired the generator up and started supplying power to my home. The unit worked flawlessly for 10 hours, getting me through the night. Woke up this morning, 07/30/23, and shut the unit down to let it cool before refueling. Went to get more fuel and when I returned home (30 mins later) I found that the top portion of the fuel tank imploded and collapsed on itself. I am in complete disbelief. This was supposed to be a reliable piece of equipment and at $4,000.00 I expected more. Yes, the unit is covered under warranty. However, no Generac certified repair shop is open on a Sunday and I estimate not having my equipment back for several weeks, figuring new parts will have to be ordered. The unit was assembled and maintained according to the manufacturer's manual (i.e, oil level, fresh fuel, proper storage, etc.) And only has 11.2 hours of run time. I went with Generac because of their exceptional reputation but now regret my purchase, as I have a $4,000.00 paper weight and no power. I may update this review once my equipment is repaired but fear I will run into the same issue in the future. I tried to add photos but I am unable to do so.
When I decided to purchase my generator, I spoke with a fellow instructor at the JATC. The company he works for is an authorized dealer of Generac and he understood my needs, as my home doesn't have natural gas nor a large propane tank. This generator is basically a whole house generator on wheels but uses gasoline. Assembly was rather easy with basic tools but a friend to help is recommended due to the weight of the unit. Speaking of weight, maneuvering is easy with the large pneumatic tires. Once the fuel system was primed it fires up a moment after the start toggle is pressed. The fuel tank is large, most small cars don't even hold 16 gallons, buy several 5 gallon cans as they are easier to lift/transport. As a licensed electrician I did the install myself and chose not to install a transfer switch but used a main breaker lock-out on my panel. As it sits the generator is not AUTO transfer switch ready but any good electrician could void your warranty and make it work...lol. For being all electric I have a light load of only 44A max per leg and the GP17500E doesn't even bat an eye. Summary.....have basic tools and a friend to help. Higher an electrician to install the proper legal hook-up means. Buy several gas can and rotate the fuel often. Very satisfied with everything.
i have owned this for a few years now. have 93 hrs. on it does a wonderful job when needed. the only thing is the battery for electric start had to replace it (sits more then it runs). when the power goes off nice to have this. we lose power at least once a week ( BAD electric company).BUY Generac if you want to be happy when power goes off!!!!!
This is my second Generac generator. The first one that I had lasted over 14 years. I sold it because after we sold our house, the new one we purchased was larger, and the 6500 w we used could not power the entire house. So, I sold it for a good price, because it was a Generac, it has a reputation for quality that lasts. This new generator GP15000E has the power to power the entire house! It is heavy, but because it has a solid cage frame on pneumatic wheels, (located in a balanced location) it is fairly easy to move. All the controls are easy to reach and read, and with the electric start, it is effortless! The only drawback is the noise factor, however, almost all gasoline generators are noisy! If this one lasts like the last one, I will have it for a long, long time!
I just survived a devastating tornado in Chattanooga in April 2020. I actually bought this generator in 2013 for emergencies but had not used it much until now. When my areas grid was completely wiped out I rolled out the GP1500 and ran it for over 3 days to keep my house running and food frozen, Many of my neighbors lost all their food and with the Covid crisis going on that is a serious time as we are on lockdown here in Tennessee. The GP1500 powered my house and kept my family safe and fed and warm etc until power was restored. What a great product and it never flinched with the hot water heater, or HVAC etc running. All I had to do was be careful and not try to run everything all at once. Thanks Generac you saved us in 2020.
