I did some much-needed tree trimming and the tree's look great, but did I have a lot of branch's! I borrowed a friends CJ601E (the 14-amp version) chipper and absolutely loved it…so much so I went out and bought a 15 amp one for myself, direct from the manufacturer! Buying direct gave a 2-year warranty, which is nice insurance and a sign the company is selling a quality product. I did a bunch of research and for chippers in the price range my budget could afford ($100-$150), there were not a lot of choices. I own some other SunJoe / SnowJoe products and knew they were reliable and very cost effective, so went with SunJoe. My research revealed a lot of reviews calling this a cheaply made piece of equipment that could not handle larger branch's, but it seems most of reviews were from people expecting this to perform as well as a $700-$800 chipper. I was initially concerned with the size limit of the branch's it can chip, but I simply cut the larger (greater than about 1.5”) branch's up and burn then in my fireplace or backyard firepit. One negative I have is on the opposite end of the size chart, I found that thin twigs (1/8” – ¼”) tend to get passed through and not chipped efficiently (See the attached picture). There needs to be a gap between the spinning chipper disk and the guard inside and I found smaller twigs can pass through the gap and therefore are not chipped. On the positive side, it does as good of a job shredding leaves to reduce the size / volume, as most leave blower/shredders I do like the fact you can buy replacement blades (2 per disk in the unit), so can swap those out, when the chipping efficiency drops off. I have re-sharpened the blade I removed, and efficiency returns to as good as new. Since the motor is a 15-amp motor, I suggest investing in a good heavy-duty extension cord. I bought a 12 gauge 25' cord and it does not get warm, even after running the chipper for a couple hours. The wheels allow the chipped to be easily moved to where you need it and it taller than it is wider, so does not take up much room in the storage shed Bottom line, this chipper / shredder is well worth the price, but does have a few limitations, as I have found with all the residential quality tools, regardless of make, that I have purchased
We have been using this chipper to eat away at a massive pile of branch wood from several felled trees in our yard, and it has more than earned its keep. It'll happily nosh on everything from willow, to apple, walnut, oak, some mystery-wooded-bush, and pine. As the blades begin to dull, you'll have to put a little more muscle & patience into the tougher branches or simply do the right/smart/suggested thing and sharpen/replace the worn bits. What I'm trying to say here is, it won't give up on you even if you ignore basic maintenance, and I don't know if that's a plus or a minus (like a lawn mower that'll run three seasons without an oil change, it's just enabling bad habits)! Don't expect it to have an effortless and easy time with branches at or near its diameter limits on the denser woods. That's the price of nearly-maintenance-free, on-off switch operation. It needs nothing from the owner but assembly and patience.
This is great for the home owner who needs to clean up branches that keep falling out of trees. Blades have two sides and can be sharpened when needed. I did buy extra blades just so I would not have to stop in the middle of my work to sharpened them. Would recommend this and great price too.
I was pleasantly surprised by the capacity of this chipper to work with heavy usage. I have a lot of trees and this time of year have 30 or so yard waste bags out for pick up each week. Now with this chipper, I cut down the bags and it worked non stop for a good 3 hours chipping. I'm a happy customer!
I purchased a Sunjoe CJ602E this fall. I have used it twice so far and love it. I have a one acre yard with a 25 by 50 foot garden. My main problem was composting corn stalks. The Sunjoe did a wonderful job with them (they were dried). Also did some lilac branches and sunflower stalks. I like the fact that it takes up little space in my shed and is easy to use. I look forward to using it a lot in the future. Thank you, Sunjoe!
