This is a poorly made item! Held together by small, cheap staples. And the latch doesn't hold the door unless the door is brought forward a tad in order to apply pressure to it. Not a quality item!
Bought this to replace a composite nesting box that I had up (birds won't use it). This one is well made and I am hoping to have some "guests" move in soon. Door pulls down for cleaning/monitoring. I do modify my nest boxes to attach to poles with predator guards (this one comes with a screw for a wood post). I wouldn't be able to build one for the price of this one.
good quality build, however it only has one screw and one mounting screw hole....should be minimum of 2 screws and 2 mounting screw holes...also, pretty sure the screws are interior use screws and not the galvanized type that should be used for outside.
Very nice. I bought two and one had a bird working on it within two days and now has a nest. Not an expert so I don't know whether it's a bluebird or not but I'm going to wait and leave whoever it is alone for a while. Hoping to get a resident in The other box soon.
I've used several of these over the years. Although the pieces are stapled together, the cedar wood weathers good, and you should be able to get several years of use from them. The lever that holds the door closed is a bit lightly made. I drilled another hole on the opposite side, and into the edge of the door, just big enough for a small nail to slide through. This will more securely keep the door from opening. I used 1" EMT conduit of 7 foot length pounded into the ground to hold the box. On the pole I used a piece of aluminum stove pipe predator baffle (do an internet search).A stovepipe cap was fitted over the 7 inch stovepipe with sheet metal screws and a 1 inch "rigid clamp" holds the baffle up about a foot beneath the house. The wobbly stovepipe baffle keeps racoons and cats, and snakes from climbing the pole to get into the nest box. The box is held to the pole by a couple of long 1/4" nuts and bolts.
