Our old water heater died one cold winter morning, and left 2 inches of water in the basement as it passed away! Our plumber said "instant hot water?" and we said "YES!" Fell in love with our Rinnai the first morning. Turned on the water, stepped into the shower and INSTANT HOT WATER! It's wonderful!
Switched from a 50-gallon electric to a gas-powered tankless heater. The water gets plenty hot and goes for days. That said, I was surprised that it takes around 30 seconds longer to actually get hot water at the tap. I realize it needs to sense movement, fire the burners and start heating water, so some delay was expected, but this about doubled the time it takes to get water at the kitchen sink, right in the middle of the house. Overall I'm pretty happy with the performance and cost, but I'll have to give it some thought before we put one in the next house.
It does take about 5-7 seconds to warm up, plus the time for the hot water to reach the faucet. A little slower that the old tank heater, but little more than a niggle. A bit noisy when operating. The hot water goes on forever, though, and bills for hot water seem less.
As long as we've had the need for hot water, the solution has always been heat it up in large containers and then use it. With the tankless heaters, we now have an on-demand solution, heating just enough water, not storing it in a big tank, not keeping it heated for whenever someone might use it, and most importantly to me, keeping this big 50 gallons of water out of my attic. Yes, it has a higher up front cost, but it's a much more modern approach, and with proper maintenance it should last a long time. If something breaks, it should be easy enough to diagnose and replace individual components to get longer life out of it.
Our hot water heater died. We brought in a plumber and the cost for the replacement was the same as install two Rinnai tankless heaters. We made a decision that helped our household. We have two Rinnai heaters for our home. They are excellent and we have noticed our water usage and gas cost less because the old hot water heater ran all the time to keep the water hot. It is not necessary now.
