I have had this for 21 months and have finally had to switch to the Diaper Genie II Elite as I am expecting a new baby. It's better than using a regular trash can and emptying it every day. I only had to empty this every 7-10 days on average. But every time I turn the compactor, smell was released through the cracks and it stinks! Don't try putting wipes or anything other than simply a diaper in it or it will pop back up when you flip it again. My daughter kept messing with it, requiring me to sanitize her hands each time because it's gross, and the worst of all: EVERY time I changed it the smell released was SO BAD that is smelled up the entire room, and if you don't tie off that bag and get it out of the house in less than 60 seconds the whole place will smell horribly! I would have to open the window and air the room out for a few hours and the smell would still linger until the next day. A babysitter changed it for me once and the smell hit her so bad she literally grapped the bag, ran to the back yard and barely made it to the grass before puking. So unless you want to deal with these issues, DON'T BUY this product!
We also have the Diaper Genie II and bought this so we wouldn't have to touch the diapers to put them in the container. What didn't occur to us until after purchase, however, is the fact that whether you drop a diaper into a container without touching it or not (as the Diaper Champ allows you to do), you've just changed your baby's diaper and will have to wash your hands anyway, so what's the advantage? More to the point, the Diaper Champ is larger and less aesthetically pleasing than the Daiper Genie II, and although there IS arguably an advantage in not having to pay a premium to buy proprietary refill bags, etc., the fact is the Champ's design makes it too easy for thing to get clogged when you're trying to turn the unit to "flush" the previously used diaper; the Genie II, on the other hand, is more straight forward and seems to more efficiently store the diapers as well as to contain their smell. If I had to purchase another such product, in short, I would definitely go back to the Genie II and not get this product.
I love this diaper pail! I've tried the diaper genies and have hated them! Not to mention, having to buy the refill cartridges. The diaper champ, however, is great since you can use any trash bag. And let's face it, these days its really important and neccessary to save all the money you can. It is easy to set up and use. This is the second diaper champ that I have purchased (the first was for my first child). I honestly have no complaints and would never use another pail!
I am about to have my third boy and used this product with my second one. It worked for awhile but didn't keep the smell out to well, plus I found it difficult to open. Eventually it broke and I found that cleaning it was a little difficult. I will be trying something new this time. Don't waste your money.
Several moms suggested we get the Diaper Champ rather than the Diaper Genie. We are so glad we listened to them. The Champ does not require special bags and is so easy to use. I could never figure out how to get my brother's Genie to work. I highly recommend the Diaper Champ.
