Many people buy this and are surprised it leaves their lips white. Yes, that's the zinc, which is naturally white and is supposed to leave a residue! Zinc lip balm is for intense sun protection, not for looking pretty. Put it on when you ski, put it on during harsh winters, or deal with the reside and wear it all year round. The pros of zinc heavily outweigh the con of white reside.
The chapstick itself feels pretty good, and seems to do a good job moisturizing. However, when applied it leaves the lips looking completely white. Even if you apply in front of a mirror and rub it in well, which is a pain, there is an opaque white sheen left behind. It might be good for overnight use in the home for some extra moisture, but using it as advertised for sun protection in public just isn't feasible. The white residue is just too strong, and looks bad on bare lips or over lipstick. One of the only Burt's Bees products that is a total miss for me.
I loving this lip balm!!! Like another person said it does give a whitish cast to the lips but I don't mind that since I feel like my lips are too dark and my skin is so pale. It's a great lip balm for both men and women, and offers sun protection, which I love! Please keep this stuff in circulation!
I live on a ranch in Central Washington State. It is not unusual for me to spend several hours outside everyday in intense, hot summer sun. My lips never sunburn while using this product. I've long been a fan of Burt's Bees lip balms, but this is the ticket for those who spend a lot of time in the sun!
