Gable plays a Broadway producer who tries to discover what's wrong with his latest production, A "May-December Romance", by re-enacting it in real life. The strategy fixes his play, but puts him in a devil of a fix. He's romantically caught between his girlish, hero-worshipping secretary (Carol Baker) and his lovely but undeniably mature ex-wife (Lilli Palmer). Set in the chic world of big-time theater, "But Not For Me" sparkles like fine champagne.
