This was an upgrade from the SD1000. The SD1200 images are generally sharper but the camera is missing several features present on the earlier model: Color Accent, Color Swap, specific vivid color selection, voice recorder. There also seems to be an SmartAuto mode firmware problem that causes high ISO settings and long exposures in low light conditions even when the flash is set to fire. This results in grainy, overexposed images in that mode. (Resetting the camera did not resolve this issue.) This is easy to overcome by using the camera in P mode in low light conditions. SmartAuto seems to work fine in bright light conditions.
There is a problem with these cameras, I have checked three of them family members own and also two of the A1100's. When set in Auto mode with the flash on Auto the camera's take pictures at way too slow shutter speeds, down to 1/15 if a second and at way to high ISO speeds between 400-800. This results if pictures that are overexposed, grainy and blurry. On all the cameras I checked if you move it into the Program mode instead of Auto then it takes great pictures at 1/60 of a second and at ISO200-250 like it should. This is definatly a problem they need to address. If you have one of these cameras check it out and let them know if it has the same problem. I the program mode it works great and outdoors in the Auto mode it works great, but it should work indoors with flash in the Auto mode also like all my previous Cannon's have.
Enjoy using this camera. Took it out of the box, and the controls were immediately intuitive to use. The picture quality is excellent. I use this camera to augment my Canon DSLR when I need to travel light, or take quick shots of candid situations. Highly recommend this product to others looking for a great little camera.
My daughter bought her camera a few weeks before me, that gave me a chance to check it out up close. I liked what saw and bought mine shortly thereafter. I'm very pleased and haven't really found anything that I don't like about the camera. I'm not sure about the battery life yet, I'll need to use it more to determine whether it's adequate or not. I do think the charger is a really great design.
photo quality seems okay but i'm not happy about the blurriness with any movement. i bought this to replace my SD600 (only because i used it so much that it needs to be replaced) and will return it. i had to retake so many photos, where with my sd600 that almost never happened. maybe due to face detection- not sure.
