I bought the 28-300L years ago. I loved it. It was an incredible lens. Then I moved to the 100-400, followed by the Mark II. The 100-400 II L was the best long zoom lens I've ever put on my camera. (Please read the full sentence, ZOOM, not fixed(prime)) Then technology changed, as did the prices of course, and the new toys came out. I've had a 5DIII since it launched. In fact I had two. Once I made the switch to dual R6's I figured it was only fair to upgrade the glass, despite the fairly hefty price mark up. The 100-500 is by no means inexpensive. Nothing Canon makes in the L range is inexpensive. However, if you're using top quality glass and the highest end full frame products, most who use them are professionals who make their money using the gear so the expensive part fades away quicker than for most. The photos are tack sharp. The extra 100mm is great, and the lens is lightweight. However, don't expect this lens to be small like the new RF 70-200. It's massive. It's as big as the 100-400 but feels a lot lighter. So far I've shot dance retcitals on it, and when the lighting is right, it allows for incredible closeups. I did buy this strictly to take to Alaska, so I will be shooting wildlife with it. If you have the money, purchase it. Think 100-400II plus less weight and even more quality improvement. I love all the features. I'm excited to toss on the new extender to see how that comes out.
I had to wait several months for this lens, but it is undoubtedly the best lens I have ever owned. Since getting into bird photography during the pandemic this is rarely off my camera. I also routinely use it with both the 1.4 and 2x extenders with great results.
Amazing RF Lens! Canon never fails... I have both the EF 100-400 and now the RF 100-500 and cannot to get back out there for all my wildlife photography trips... An excellent piece of glass!
Awesome range to have in a size I can include in my hiking pack and not break my back on longer treks with climbing. Haven't had this lens very long yet...but focus and sharpness in images produced look great.
Excellent lens for birds, wildlife, etc. which is what I primarily use it for. Very impressed with the image quality combined with the EOS R5. Sharp images even with the 1.4 extender. Highly recommend this lens.
