Don't stay up - they fall down and bunch around the fetlock. I measured to ensure I had the correct size but they can't get tight enough to stay up - and I don't think I'd want to make them that tight anyway. I also had one tear after just a week of use.
I bought these boots (blue in horse size) because my 15h gelding has been chipping his hooves stomping due to flies. I like the color and fit of the boots and went with Cashel because they're a well known brand so I was hoping they would hold up. I had seen other people's year old boots and there were some tears but frankly that is to be expected with turnout. What was NOT expected was the top velcro pull (with Cashel logo) to pull off the boot on day 2. He got one day of use out of them before they broke? Not the quality I would expect and frankly that I paid for. Going to look into an alternative solution. Very disappointed all around.
I've been using these for a little over a month, and overall, I think they are a fairly good product. They do scrunch down a bit, but only about an inch or two. My horse got a ton of fly bites on her lower forelegs last summer, so many that I would find blood droplets on her hooves. No fly spray provided full-time protection. I have not observed this since she started wearing these boots. She seems comfortable in them, and I don't see her stomping flies when she's wearing them.
The boots I bought were labeled draft but didn't fit my Belgian at all so I put them on my Percheron who is more warm blood size. They slid down after 2 days and wrinkled and bunched up on her pastern rubbing sores on them which I now have to fight to heal because the flys I was trying to avoid keep chewing on. Total waste of money
My pony somehow is the major attractant for flies at my barn. These leg guards lasted just over a year with him, which is impressive because he is the "rough and tumble" type. They stayed up, however did twist just a little at the end I believe just from the use put on them. They lasted longer than expected, and kept his legs free from bot eggs, nagging gnats, and regular old flies. I just purchased his second pair. Cashel is a great brand especially in regards to fly protection. The prices are reasonable and I find that their products last longer than competitors.
