I sent this radio to my mother, who is in Russia. She just started using it. She told me over the phone, that the power knob on the side doesn't switch off, so she has to take the batteries out in order to make the unit to be turned off. for some reason it tunes into Chinese channels, which is odd, since it is being used in Russia, and considering it does not tune into many channels. My mom in particular wanted to tune into Ukrainian channels, but it would barely transmit public general channels like Mayak. Definitely I would not recommend it for a gift. Try it for yourself, you can exchange if it doesn't work etc. but when you gift it to someone, especially in a different country.. not a good idea I know there are many Russian-Americans, who buy gifts for their friends and relatives in Russia, I would not recommend this item.

Though it doesn't get the weaker or distant stations, the stations I want in this area it gets well. Doesn't matter if the digital number is a little off, just turn the dial til you get a good sound. I like and get 620, 730, 880, 1320, 1360 am. 730 am doesn't come in at night well at my exact location. Also I tune in to 101.5 and 104.7 fm...real clear. The sound on this radio surprisingly gets a base sound with it and sounds very balanced and normal. The shortwave, the signals come in and out and more than 1 station at a time. For the money, that doesn't bother me: Strongest signals I've found so far are China and Cuba (in English and Spanish). Rated it 3 stars because I can't get 1170 am, Wheeling or 1150 am. The strong station 1020 am KDKA doesn't come in by itself..overlaps with another station.

My unit worked fine for the first couple of hours and then the volume went really loud and I couldn't turn it down. I think the volume switch broke because the unit wouldn't shut off either. Most electronics failures happen within the first few hours of use and this unit happened to fail. Failures are few and far between, so I'd still recommend this product to others because it worked well while it was working.
