"For better or worse? begins on their wedding night when Bob (Fred MacMurray) tells his bride Betty (Claudette Colbert) he?s quit the brokerage business and plans to raise chickens on a rustic farm miles from civilization. Betty tries to be supportive, but her enthusiasm wanes when they move into their backwoods, ramshackle house. The door comes off its hinges, the ceiling leaks, the furniture collapses, and there is stove, an ancient and malevolent wood-burner that is clearly out to get her. Life becomes an endless battle with repairs, rain, ornery livestock and chickens. And to add Betty?s misery, there?s a seductive neighbor (Louise Allbritton) with a mechanized farm that appeals to Bob. On the brighter side, there?s a group of locals straight out of ?hicksville? including Ma and Pa Kettle (Marjorie Main and Percy Killbride) who keep Betty amused with their colorful eccentricities.
