It's ugly. I ordered it because it is plastic. My metal one rusted quickly on the lid %26 bottom. This looks ugly out of the box and worse on my countertop.
We have a lot of waste in the summer with garden. I have been fighting the fruit flies and gnats all summer, glad to get this. to keep away the pests. I had one before, my husband left it out after emptying it and ran over it with the truck. First time I have seen this available since. so much better that plastic coffee can.
I'm rating this a 1 star because the pail I received was missing the orginal filter and the part that holds the filter in its place on the lid. Without this critical piece, fruit flys and other insects have easy access to the scraps and no filter means odor. For $13, not worth paying for return shipping.
We've used it for a couple weeks now and it's almost perfect. Our only improvement would be to make the filter a tiny bit larger because it allows a crack of air opening and we're afraid that will attract the fruit flies...so far it hasn't happened but it's the only flaw we see in the compost pail.
This was the compost pail recommended by America's Test Kitchen. I could have purchased 2 on here for the price Amazon wanted at the time ($28, free shipping, Oct. 2014, I think on Walmart it was $13.98 or so with free pick up). It's flimsy, thinner than expected plastic, but it works fine and is durable enough for it's purpose. My only redesign would be to make it shorter and wider. It sits on my counter, but since it sits high, you cannot open the lid to stay open as it hits the upper cabinets--of course one can just pull it out, but it would be nice to not have to move it. So every scrap I have, I have to open the lid each time, hold the lid up and deposit. No more fruit flies invading the house (where DO they come from?), no smells, and I do not have to drag my lazy butt out to the compost bin to empty my bowl every day.
