The training wheels did not work for the bike that we have. The bike itself would not allow the top part of the training wheel to fit securely on to the back wheels. If we would have actually put them on the bike the lug nut would not have been secure.
First what I didn't like...I didn't like that the training wheels did not come with a set of nuts to hold them on. I bought a used 16in bike for my niece for Christmas and it's original training wheels were gone as were the nuts that held them on. I had to go get a new set of nuts to put the training wheels on. I had an easy time putting on the training wheels and did not need the axle extenders I thought I might after reading reviews about these training wheels here. You're better off purchasing the training wheels first and then purchasing the axle extenders only if you need them. I think these training wheels will be well used and can't wait to see my niece riding her "new" bike!
One of the wheels on the training wheel attachment broke on my granddaughters 12" bike. These were the only training wheel replacements listed for this bike. I thought all I had to do is undo the old ones and attach the new ones but it was not that simple. This product did not fit because of the chain guard that is on the girl's bike. I had to retool the center so it would fit the wheel bracket & make other adjustments to make it fit. I don't understand why there was not an exact replacement for the training wheels that were on the bike since they came from the same company that made the bike.
I purchased these training wheels with high expectations because of all of the positive reviews I had read at walmart.com and elsewhere; however, I was unable to use them on the bike I purchased. They would not fit. It was a 20" girls' Huffy and the rear axle was not long enough to accommodate them (or any other training wheels). I would not hesitate to try these training wheels again if the circumstance arises, but know that these training wheels have a WIDE mounting bracket that may not fit on all models of bikes.
The concept seemed good - springy wheels that fit many sized children's bicycles. But problems from the start on my small girl's bike. 1) Assembly directions said to put two washers on axel then attach retaining clip at the notch. But there are two notches per axel. Two washers forced me to use the upper notch which was too shallow. One washer let me use the other appropriately deep notch for the clip, but then the wheel seemed a bit loose, although this hasnt caused any trouble so far. 2) It is hard to get the wheel height even when installing, but doable and the result does have a nice stable springy feel to it. Not clunky like some training wheels. But after riding a while, the metal shaft and the spring rotate back and make the bicycle hard to ride. My daughter runs in to us every day complaining that it is too hard to ride. Pushing the wheel forward to straighten it fixes the problem, but it doesnt last. 3) The tire is made of a very soft spongy rubber, so it grips well. But for some reason it wears unevenly. The inside of the tire wears down faster than the outside. This may also be due to the springyness of the entire device, but hard to tell. I flipped the wheels after a couple weeks and will likely have to flip again soon. So these are economy priced, but not sure if they will hold up long enough for my daughter to no longer need them. A few engineering changes might make these a superior product. But unless that happens, you might want to spend a few extra dollars for a better set.
