The indicator solution was all dried up. I'm taking it back to Walmart and getting my money back. It doesn't test for the levels of lead I am looking for in water. Only indicates if there are emergency levels.

This lead testing system does not work. I used the leach method as per instructions. I scraped the finish off of a baby's high chair and let it soak over 4 hours in distilled vinegar. A Q-tip they supplied was immersed in the indicator solution and then placed in the vinegar test solution. It showed no change in color which means no lead and the chair would have been safe. To validate this result I scrapped some pure lead from a battery terminal, washed all contaminates from it with soapy water and then did the same test as with the high chair scrapings to find that the test indicated no lead here either. Therefore, this lead test kit cannot be relied upon to make any determination as to the lead content of a finish.

We tested four areas in a hundred area old home. All areas tested okay - no lead. But I would have liked to have had a known lead surface to verify that the test was working as properly.

When I opened the kit the small tiny bottle with the testing chemical solution was completely dried out. FirstAlert claimes a 5-year warranty on this product, which in my case was made in 2009 and bought in 2011, so it was supposed to be good for 3 years more. I think it's overprised to start with. I paid $20 Canadian at Walmart. I bet the cost of that tiny amount of the chemical is less than a penny.
