With the eTrex Legend, Garmin has loaded a full basemap of North and South America into one small unit. The Legend is also designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections. The eTrex Legend is also equipped with additional memory totaling eight megabytes. The added memory allows the eTrex Legend to accept downloaded map data from Garmin's entire line of MapSource CD-ROMs, including Fishing Hot Spots. The eTrex Legend comes in a brightly-colored translucent blue case that really makes the unit stand out. New to the product design, Garmin will include marine aids to navigation in addition to the basemap. These navigational aids will be pre-loaded into each unit from the factory.

I have used this GPS for about 3 years now and overall it has been a great GPS. I found that if it said I was on top of something even if the accuracy was 20 feet I was really on top of it. The cable to load waypoints stopped working on my unit rather quickly but overall that is the only complaint. It took a beating overall and kept working I am only replacing now as with the beating it has taking I think I finally knocked a wire loose.

This particular GPS is great for what I use it for--walking in the evenings and using it on canoe trips. I sometimes wish it had a few more bells and whistles on it, or had color, but for what I spent it does what I need it to do. It does occasionally take longer than I would like for it to when trying to track satellites when I first turn it on, but this is something that I can live with.

I was completely impressed with the Garmin eTrex Legend. My first lock-on took only 72 seconds and has locked in about 10 seconds ever since. It has features I never dreamed of and I especially like the one-handed operation. I can even use it on the highway.

I am a little disappointed in the fact that it doesn't work under tree cover. Maybe other brands don't either but I bought it mostly for hiking/birding and if in the woods it doesn't work, I don't get much use out of it. Maybe a bettre model would work but they are too pricey for me.

This little GPS Unit does exactly what I bought it for. It is sufficently accurate to get me on top of the geocaches I'm hunting that I am usually able to find them. Don't buy this unit if you want to navigate the streets and highays...Buy a car unit for that...This GPSr is the entry level and does simple navigation over ground well. It has good battery life and although the screen is small and its contents sometimes hard to read by someone with 53 year old eyes, it is easy to learn how to use.
