I checked consumer reports, and they ranked it number 2 behind the Nuvi 760. But for the money, I thought 660 was a better buy. They are basically the same unit. Would be nice if there were a few more choices of American English voices to choose from. My wife got a GPS with her rental car when she went out of town, and it had several choices. But that would not stop me from purchasing this product again.
I've owned my Nuvi 660 since January, 2007, bought as the NAV device for my (then) new Mazda CX-7 CUV, and even after almost 1.5 years or ownership the 660 continues to amaze me with excellent performance, exacting direction-finding, and easy home-computer-friendly updating. I can say enough about how gosh, darned accurate this device turns out to be! I mean within 100 feet accuracy!! Since I've had it in the CX-7 it only failed one time, and *ANY* GPS would have failed that particular test. On vacation in Arizona, there were 3 freeway on-ramps and bridges in Flagstaff that were undergoing extensive demolition and rebuilding, in a 1.5-mile square area, and it didn't work there. Other than that occasion, it's been fail-safe, accurate, and the Clear Channel Traffic Updates work pretty much spot-on right to boot. I've had the Nuvi *ON* my dash, not windshield mounted because of California laws against windshield mounted devices of any kind, mounted on the Garmin Dash Mount System, and that also works great, holding the Nuvi secure and steady over any road surface, any situation barring an ABS-brake maneuver where the Nuvi just might move a little. We've traveled some 13K miles using the Nuvi 660 in the CX-7, and it's always on, even if just to use the very nice Trip Meter Function(s), especially the GPS-calculated Speed Display, which has saved me from many a speeding ticket. Perhaps the best way to sum up the Nuvi 660 is how easy and intuitive it is to use: I've only used the so-called "manual" twice, the rest has been touch-and-go use with the easy to use 420x240-pixel touchscreen. I performed 4 or 5 software/firmware updates on our Intel iMac so far, plus I did the *big* NAVTEQ Map Update 2008 earlier this year, a $70 investment which loaded almost 2GB of USA & Canada street, highway, city and road map data into the Nuvi, keeping pace with major changes along with a ton of new POI's. The Nuvi 660 has thus far worked flawlessly, with no problems encountered in 1.5 years of use. The LCD screen remains bright, all functions are still on "go" mode, and like I wrote above, I cannot emphasize enough how accurate the device's GPS system is...it just doesn't make errors and is uncannily, eerily precise in meting out distances down to the 100-foot mark for low-speed turns in complex city traffic situations. Surprisingly I found it worked 100% in downtown San Francisco at rush hour @5PM or so, with a lot of corollary electronic systems and high-rise offices and towers potentially getting in the way of maneuvering and driving across town to my daughter's office, but nope, it got us there on time, even snaking us around a huge traffic jam which posed a hazard. The latest firmware-software update produced a "beep" tone just before any announced turn or instruction, a new addition to the Nuvi's reportoire of sounds, but such is progress I guess. Over the time since new I've changed from 2D to 3D-view more than once, I've updated the Traffic Subscription twice, routinely connect it vis the USB port to the iMac to check for updates (every couple of moths on average), and have learned to REMOVE IT from the CX-7 when parked for any length of time, just to guard against theft on a practical level: if it's not there, nobody's going to be tempted to break my window to get at it, right? Or so I think...All in all this GPS system, POI device, and constant security and direction-finder deserves a solid 5-STARS Rating, bar none, as to this day I don't believe that there's another brand or model that gives you everything the Nuvi 660 does at its price point. It's simply the best there is for the $$, and I'm so glad that I got this thing instead of a factory dash-installed GPS system in the CX-7, which would have been a slow, ponderous DVD-based unit with $300+ update DVD's to buy every year. No thanks, and thank you Garmin!
big name, but just soso. 1.my t-mobil phone htc shadow is not on the list which in the gps, so I can't connect my phone to use the bluetooth handset free...I can't wait until July. 2.when mp3 connect to my car's fm channel, much noise, it's a no use funtion. 3.I try tomtom before, it's more friendly on the way when navigate. 4.high price.
I do enjoy my new gadget I purchased, especially since my job involves a lot of driving. There are a few flaws, however. It does not always take you the quickest route. It instructed me to drive through a dead end, which was a grassy unfinished area with the street I wanted on the other side, yet there are no plans to finish the road. Also, screen protectors and protectors for GPS are not currently available. It does not always have the road in its system that you may need. I'm still learning how to use it and I do enjoy it thoroughly. Happy hunting!
I bought this model to use on a motorcycle, 2 cars & also carry in my pocket. It is great for all those needs. The blue tooth & voice to text functions are a must in these units. The 2 things I wish could be improved are the FM transmitter & the battery life. Neither are poor, just could be better.
