I bought the Gerber Exchange-a-blade system probably 10 years ago. I've used it often. The mechanism in the handle finally gave way. I'm going to buy another since I've had good luck with it. Just to say, I've never changed a blade. The original blade in the handle is still razor sharp. Be sure to cut only on the pull. Pushing the blade can break it.
I've had one of these for a long time but never put it to hard use. I took it on a trip and put it to the test for 5 days. The blade was very sharp and efficient. However, it's also relatively flimsy. That's the trade off for being light weight. I was able to process 4-6" diameter wood pretty easily with it. The button kind of locked up on me a bit, but I think it was because the blade tension was too tight. Once I loosened it slightly, it worked fine. I'd give this a 4, or even a 5 star rating if the blade were a bit heavier. It would be awesome if they offered heavier replacement blades.
Is this the exchange a handle saw. I broke mine out hunting near home I'm glad I wasn't out on a mountain or deep in the bush on an expensive hunting trip. The handle needs more structure and support. I like the blades and idea. Let me know if you come out with a better handle.
Had it in my deer hunt go to bag. Down went the deer and when hung I got out the kit. Opened the saw when done with the skinning and the handle split in half. Had to use my other tool a multi with a 4 inch saw to cut the deer. It didn't last to make one cut.
I've had one of these saws for at least ten years and have gotten a ton of use out of it. It's not meant for heavy limbs and trees but does great for clearing branches for a shooting lane. The blades are very sharp and stay that way even after much use. It's a great saw for the price,
