Set in 1996, this is the true story of the patients of a Russian psychiatric asylum who become involved with the Chechen War after their doctors, nurses and attendants abandon them, and a band of Chechen soldiers arrives to set up camp. Central to the story is a young female patient, Janna, who falls in love with a Chechen soldier, Ahmed, abandoning her boyfriend, Canadian pop singer Bryan Adams, who appears to her as a hallucination singing his hit, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?"
