I have used this type of feed tub for 36 years. I use snaps and eyelets with rings to suspend them. Horses can still pull on them but not with the force they would with rigid attachment. The hold up a long time, and are easy to clean. These are very well made, and incorporate a sort of retainer to keep the eyelets from pulling through the slits in the tubs (the most common failure). These arrived with a very strong new tire-like odor, and had to be placed aside a few days to air out. After two weeks they are now in use, but still have a residual odor that will take more time to dissipate.
In my area, it is hard to find these tubs with the eyes. I was replacing my stallion's old tub, since it was starting to show some wear. He turned 33 in May, looks like he is 12, so he deserves the best!
Bought this to feed watered down pellets to the horses during our hot Arizona summer. I do not hang them anywhere. If used on the ground please take out the cotter pins on the sides otherwise they will come out and you will find them in the stall
Levi is known for destroying feed buckets, and rips them off the wall, one by one. It seems to bring him much joy. So now we have had to go to ground feeding him. He enjoys playing with his food... and will sling it around, and likes to play with the tub as well, so we wanted something substantial and deep. This tub fits the bill as it is heavy duty, and one of the deepest I could find. He is still able to sling feed out of it, and it only took him a day to figure out he can easily flip it, but it is much better than the lower sided ground feeders. I did not have an issue with a strong rubber odor, as I read in several of the other reviews, but my only complaint would be that one of the metal eye hooks came out in his stall one day. In SmartPaks defense though, he does play it like a tambourine when he is in his stall, holding it in his mouth and banging it around, and the jingle jingle of the metal eye hooks could be heard throughout the aisle. If your horse doesn't use the tub as a stall toy, then you probably will not have any issues. After the first one came out, we decided to remove the other two ourselves, to avoid any worry. Removing them was quite easy, and I recommend doing so, if you have no intention of using them. All in all, it is a great feeder, easy to clean, heavy duty and very affordable.
I got this feed tub a month ago or so to replace a broken plastic one for my horse. It is very good quality, I like the high sides so that he doesn't drop grain over the edges. I much prefer these black rubber tubs as they don't crack, and they don't break as easily as the plastic feeders.
