This deluxe collector's edition of Tolkien's modern classic is boxed and bound in green leatherette with gold and red foil stamping on the spine and cover. The text pages are printed in black with green accents. It includes five full-page illustrations in full color and many more in two color in addition to Thror's map--all prepared by the author. "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

Book came completely damaged. The entire outer box case to the book was ripped all the way across. This did not occur in shipping as this and Lord of the Rings (2 books) were shrink wrapped to a large piece of cardboard much larger than either book... And the box was fully protected. I ordered The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings collectors editions. Each book was individually shrink wrapped (damage to the hobbit was inside the shrink wrap). Then both books were laid on a larger piece of cardboard and shrink wrapped to the cardboard. Plenty of packaging then added around, on top, and below. The side of the box could not reach the inner wrapped hobbit book. Basically this was damaged BEFORE it was shipped. Then I did an online return to find it would be 2 to 3 weeks to get a replacement (whereas if I bought a new copy I'd have it in 2 days). I called customer service to change my exchange to a refund (to buy a replacement and have here for Christmas) but they couldn't change my exchange request to a return... And told me to cancel the return request online.. Which I did... and then initiate a refund return. But now I can't even do that nor could the rep do anything because I cancelled the first return. I was told to try another online return in a day or two. Really? I can't now return my damaged book because I followed the instructions of your customer Svc rep and your computer system isn't working right? If you read how many have received this same book damaged...you will see why I believe Walmart is selling damaged goods at half price... without telling anyone. If the can resolve this and replace my damaged copy I'll be happy and edit this post.

The Hobbit is an enthralling adventure of fantasy and mysterious fortune. It's about a short man or hobbit that is taken on an adventure to help a group of dwarves retake their lost mountain kingdom from a dragon named Smaug. Negatives: Don't get me wrong, I love this book, but it can get a little long sometimes. Some parts of the book can go on a little tediously. Another thing is that the book is fantasy ( which can be hard to relate to ) so it's sometimes hard to visualize the characters that he is going over. Since he can't show you, he has to describe it. Positives: The book does a great job with character development. It has a legendarily epic plotline. Also, The Hobbit is almost always pulling you in too read more. When it starts getting dull, the author throws in trolls, elves, wizards, goblins, or some other creature. Rating: I would give this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars. This book is definitely recommendable. It takes you on an influential adventure to remember. Enjoy the ride!
