Look INSIDE the case. There's a striker in there (it's in a tiny zipper bag) for the matches. On the bottom there's a ferro rod for striking with a sharp edge, such as the spine of a knife or a p38 or a piece of a hacksaw blade. Look on youtube for "ferrocerium rod" or "ferro rod" or "fire steel" demo videos to see how these are meant to be used. There are TONS of videos. It's already been demonstrated to be waterproof by a few youtubers, I've already proven to myself that the striker INSIDE the case works just fine, even just holding the striker in one hand while lighting the match off it with the other. Fill in the empty space inside the case with your favorite tinder, both to keep the matches from rattling around and, well, to have tinder, and done. Just bought this item in the store for a buck. Probably would have rated higher if the threaded cap was better quality. I had to be very careful to not cross thread it. The UCO Stormproof Match Kit with Waterproof Case is a much better value at $4.97 in store.

These work okay but a small pill bottle etc that will seal works just as well... that little rod on the bottom is no striker....who knows what it was for
