First off I want to thank Michelin for their Hydro Edge and X-ice tires. 16" wheels do fit on 2003 Mercedes E320 sport models with air ride, DTS, ABS and traction control. Combined with the air ride suspension, they felt a bit spongy for the first week or so. The ride on the freeway is smooth, confident and quiet. A 300 mile trip still gave 29 MPG. On steep inclines and untreated pavement after the first snow event, there was no dramatic tire spinning or sliding while turning or stopping. Accelerating from a standstill was positive and without excessive traction control assist. Impressed with traction qualities and handling on icy roads. The standard rear wheel drive Mercedes, combined with the X-ice tires were way above what I expected. You won't look like the ill prepared driver stuck in the snow with these!
My first trip with these tires was over a 5100' pass in a snow storm. Didn't need chains and never felt a slip or slide. Still snowing and still driving with them and feeling safe. I would definitely recommend these to others and buy them again myself.
I bought these a few months back. The grip is equivilant with other snow tires for dry/wet, haven't had any snow/ice yet. The greatest problem with them is the balance. My tire shop tried balancing the tires 3 seperate times and still couldn't get the shimmies out of the tire even after I put about 1k miles to "warm up" the tires. The tires I recieved were manufactured in 2009. they suggested I go to a shop with a Roadforce tire balancer to check for defective sidewalls.
I just bought a 2007 Mustang with no traction control and no ABS, so I figured I needed a good set of winter tires to get through the northern Ohio winter. My experience with winter tires was limited to the old retread snow tires my father used in the 70's. My how things have changed! The Michelin X-ice Xi2 tires are amazing. We are having a mild winter, but these tires have gripped tight in everything I've driven through, with the possible exception of deeper snow. We had about 6" of snow a few weeks ago, and unplowed roads were a little slick while accelerating, but braking was good. Where these really shine is on packed snow and icy surfaces. They grip almost as well as on dry pavement. You can still break traction while accelerating, but you almost have to try to do it. Braking is very good. You can still do donuts with these tires, but you won't be doing them by accident. They're a little pricey, but I highly recommend them.
I'm starting my second winter season in Wi driving on these tires. They are truly amazing. I travel about 200 miles a day in my sales/consulting position and can't let snow keep me from my appointments. With these tires I know I can make my appointments, and better yet make it home safely to my family no matter the amount of snow and ice I must drive through. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen cars loosing control and I feel like I'm glued to the road. If you are like me and need to drive in bad winter weather, these are the tires you want. Unbelievable performance in snowy/icy roads.
