I owned a Canon PowerShot S3 prior to owning the Nikon D40. The Nikon D40 is the best purchase that I have made. It is really easy to use and takes great pictures. I have already recommended this camera to others! I have had it for a little over a month and I am ready to order the next lense. I take a lot of sports pictures and I need the bigger zoom for soccer and basketball pictures.

Great camera. Did a lot of research and many agreed that for an amateur this camera is MORE than enough. I just took a photography class today and many people had this camera or had used it in the past. It takes GREAT pictures but I do recommend that you take a class or read a book to learn how to fully utilize all of the great features so that you don't have to rely on the "ready made" settings. Learn to use the Aperture, Shutter Speed, and lighting meter - you'll be glad!

I am not that great at taking pictures but this camera makes me look like a pro. I bought this camera because our old Sony digital camera was not keeping up with our busy 3 year old. With the flash delay by the time I took a picture I had the back of my son's head or he was looking down. I needed a camera that would take an instant picture and this one performs exactly like I wanted. It focuses and snaps in the blink of an eye. I have taken some really awesome pictures of my son swinging on the tire swing, playing on a moonwalk. Pictures that I would have never gotten with our old camera and the picture quality is AMAZING. My only complaint about this camera is that I had gotten used to using the display screen to take a picture without having to look in the camera. When I got this camera I couldn't figure out how to use the display screen so I called customer service for Nikon and they told me that's not an option on this camera and the only reason why I didn't rate it 5 stars. But I have quickly gotten used to looking through the camera to take a picture and then the picture instantly shows up on the display screen. The camera is very user friendly, easy to use. I don't want to sit and read a 30 page manual. The Quick Start Guide had me taking pictures like a pro in minutes. This camera is worth every penny!!!

A very good, easy to use camera. I have used 35mm cameras my whole life and was hesitant to switch to a digital version, but it was worth it. The battery lasts forever and it takes great pictures. The manual gives you tips for different picture taking scenarios and helps get you familiarized with the functions. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to spend $400+ for a great camera.
