OK, let's deal with the inevitable Guided By Voices comparisons. Yes, Swearing At Motorists are from Dayton, Ohio. Yes, they write short songs. Yes, drummer Don Thrasher was in GBV. And, yes, they're pretty damn good. A drum and guitar duo, Swearing At Motorists' sparse sound is filled out with some additional guitar from Matt Bowman, tape effects and mostly double tracked vocals. There's a real Americana vibe to the songwriting here, though it never really strays over into country, alt or otherwise. But these are great songs; Dave Doughman writes about commonplace sorrow and hopelessness with an endearing honesty and candor. And he throws in a few great one-liners as well--especially not to be missed is the haunting closer, "Neighborhood of Sirens."
