The VDR-M30 uses either DVD-RAM or DVD-R discs, giving you multiple recording and playback options. DVD-R discs are tough and versatile, and can be played back on most home DVD players. However, DVD-RAM discs allow you to record and erase, just like videotapes. DVD-RAM discs can also be played back in compatible devices, like select computers and home DVD-players. The VDR-M30 not only lets you record onto DVD, but you can also record onto SD Memory Cards. SD cards are versatile, high-capacity storage cards that are extremely small - about the size of a postage stamp. They work as "digital film", letting you capture images and then transfer them to a PC, TV, PDA, or other device equipped with an SD slot. A single DVD-RAM disc can hold approximately 120 minutes of high-quality MPEG2 moving pictures in standard recording mode. You can also record in XTRA mode for the best picture quality possible for the remaining disc space. A new, compact drive and higher-density mounting help the VDR-M30 achieve a super-slim body, approximately 2 �� inches wide. The compact drive widens the opening for easier disc insertion and reduces pickup travel distance. A miniaturized lens-section and battery also make the VDR-M30 smaller than our previous models. Unlike videotapes, DVDs need no rewinding or fast-forwarding to search for specific scenes. The camcorder's LCD displays a list of the recorded scenes for quick, easy searching. Images recorded onto DVD-RAM or DVD-R discs can also be played on a DVD recorder or DVD player, so you don't have to hook the camcorder up to a TV to watch your recordings. With the VDR-M30, you can select the scenes you've shot onto a disc and arrange them to play back in any order you want. You can create your own scenarios, and then save them into a playlist with seamless transitions between scenes. Since the VDR-M30 records onto DVD-RAM discs, the camera automatically searches for blank disc space, and then starts recording at the push of a button. This way, you don't have to worry about accidentally recording over something you don't want to erase. Since the camcorder uses a "non-contact" method to record and play, repeated playback doesn't damage the image - like it does with videotape. Your favorite videos and images can be kept for years without any loss in quality. Plus, DVD-RAM disc space can be rewritten approximately 100, 000 times, making them both economical, and ideal for repeated recording. In addition to moving images, the VDR-M30 can also record still images (640 x 480 pixels) onto a DVD-RAM disc (alongside your video recordings), or onto an SD Memory Card. DVD-RAM discs are standardized, making them ideal for transferring recorded data to a PC. The VDR-M30 records video in the MPEG2 format, which can be easily processed by a PC for advanced editing capabilities. Digital EIS is a unique idea that helps compensate for unintentional hand and/or camcorder movement. It even reduces unwanted jitter from recordings made in a car, or while walking. 10x Optical Zoom produces close-up shots with extraordinary clarity. And since the VDR-M30 features variable zoom speeds, you can adjust how fast the camcorder lens moves from wide-angle to full telephoto. The zoom ratio can be increased to an impressive 240 times, producing an incredibly close shot. This way you'll end up with a great picture no matter how far away you shoot from. To save battery power during recording and playback, the VDR-M30 features a color viewfinder that can be used instead of the LCD.
