Personnel: Jim Chappell (piano, synthesizer, tambourine); Claytoven, Annie Stocking, Sandy Griffith, Larry Batiste (vocals); Jean-Michel Hure (acoustic guitar); Dawn Dover, Candace Guirao, Marty Simonds, Dawn Dover, Iris Drummer, Sarah Knutson, Leonid Igudesman (violin); Emil Miland, Jeff Watson (cello); Rita Thies (flute); Marilyn Coyne (oboe, English horn); Tom Politzer (clarinet); Alicia Telford (French horn); Hall N. Goff (trombone); Pat Klobas (acoustic bass); Skylark (fretted & fretless electric basses); Jimmy Sanchez (drums); Michael Pluznick (percussion). Recorded at Mesa Recording, Sebastopol, California and Naked Drummer Studios, San Anselmo, California in February and March 1996. Includes liner notes by Laurie Sammis. If George Winston's FOREST is the definitive contemporary expression of man's encounter with nature, Jim Chappell has chosen to narrow his sights a little. ACADIA is his tribute to one place: Acadia National Park, set on the coast of Maine. Employing cello, violin, oboe, flute, and other instruments, these 13 tracks meander through forests and inlets, mountains and anonymous bays. Both "Wonderland Tidepool" and the more extensive "Out Towards the Islands" are steeped in solitude. Some of the pieces are more upbeat than others; Chappell's piano provides a sprightly accompaniment on such tracks as "The Carriage Road," sparking the delight of all who journey through ACADIA.
