I'm new to the MP3 player/music download world, but I'm not a complete techno idiot. I could not get this modulator to work at all. I downloaded songs from Walmart.com to my player. I could play the songs in my earbuds but when I hooked up the modulator it would not play them. I also tried putting the songs on a USB drive since the modulator will work from one of those as well. Still no go. I am guessing there are two problems. In the modulator instructions it says will not play files that have Digital Rights Management. I don't know what that means but I bought the songs legally from Walmart. I didn't steal them. The other issue is they must have a bitrate of 128kb per second. I believe most songs that you download now are much higher than that. I had a friend try the modulator for me as well. We found a couple of songs in her library that were 128 and put them on a USB. The modulator still did not work.
Condition of stations varies. I live in houston, TX, and the best station I've found usable is 88.3. The others are just not as good; some already have a radio broadcasting on it and can't even override that. Some works better lined up with the antenna or without anything blocking it. However, I'm rating this 3 stars because I'm not looking for a perfect product, just something to help connect my mp3 player to my car. It helps that it's universial. I can listen to anything with a 3.5 jack. If you're picky and expect perfection, you won't like this item. but if you're like me and just want something new to listen to, then you'll be fine with this. A plus is that if you don't like it you could always return it. Walmart is usually pretty easy about that.
I just wanted a cheep one of these to use in my car so I didnt have to swtich out cds all the time. It does pretty it didn't come it totally clear put it works good enough for mean. So if your trying to go cheeper this would be one I would recommend!
The FM modulator works just fine with the inclosed 1/8 inch plug. I was not able to get the MP3 USB player to work. I bought it primarily for the FM modulator t work with a tape player and any mp3 abilities was a bonus. The manual does specify some restrictions on the MP3 player. (bit rate file format) but I was not able to get that to work. As simply a modulator; it works but do not buy it planning to use the on board MP3 player.
Even it is designed to use in your car, I bought it for my workshop to play MP3 files from my USB thumbdrive. It works perfect with my home stereo reciever. I used a wall power supply that came with electric cooler (the one you plug into your car to keep your food cold) to power it up. Avoid using the little AC/car wall converters - their electronics generates way to much noise to listen to anything. A transformer-based power supply like the one from the cooler works great!
