I was a little hesitant about buying a "refurbished" tablet, however after reading the reviews from other people, it sounded as if the refurbished product was just as good as a new. I received it via fed-ex today (kudos to wal-mart for the less than 48 hour free delivery) and I was pleased to see that it looks and operates like a brand new unit. No one would be able to tell that this was refurbished without being told first. Well worth the $$$$!
My grown children have iphones and ipads. I own a samsung galaxy phone and chose the same brand tablet. I would reccommend my tablet over any other on the market. I love and use it more than I ever use my computer! I love the touch screen. The refurbished tablet was brand new with the same warranity. I saved a couple of hundred dollars since mine cost me $388.
The device is fast and flexible. Primarily, it functions as a device to consume media and access files. It is not a great input device, which is the case for all tablets. The battery life is outstanding. I get through an entire day with heavy use and with plenty of battery to spare. The device is stable as well, not a whole lot of crashing apps, though it does happen occasionally. The size is just right. The 10.1 provides a great screen, while the thin and lightweight body fit very well into a portfolio style case. The price is a bit steep, but is in line with its competitors for the moment. The display leans a bit towards a blue hue, but not so much that it is a distraction. It's most noticeable when the background is supposed to be white. Speakers are adequate - loud enough for most situations, but could be a bit under-powered when trying to share something with a group of people. The quality of the sound is not bad for the size. Having two speakers that sit at the side of the device rather than on the back is a plus. I really like the flexibility of the Android OS. I'm not much of a fan of the stock Samsung apps though. They don't seem to really add anything to the device.
I have a first gen iPad and the 16GB Wifi only Galaxy Tab 10.1 to compare with each other. The Galaxy Tab is very thin and light compared with the iPad and has reasonable battery life. I have an Android phone so I was excited for Honeycomb and after using it for 2 months (at which point the Tab died and I shipped it back to Samsung for repairs) I can say that it still needs work. I upgraded the OS to the TouchWiz version so I was able to use it before and afterwards and my comments apply to both. The Good: Maps are much better on the Tab. The browser is comparable in performance to Safari and I like having tabs. The integration to Google is much better and as I use GMail and all the other Google apps this is nice. The Bad: Poor performance, even after a factory reset the tablet just is more sluggish than the iPad. Using several widgets makes it even worse. There is a lot of stutter when doing almost anything on the tablet, changing from Landscape to Portrait is much slower than the iPad. There just aren't the apps like there are for the iPad. Even apps that exist for both platforms the version for Android is either the same or vastly inferior (usually inferior). The form factor (widescreen) isn't as friendly for browsing or reading. It also results in apps not being able to adapt to Landscape vs Portrait mode that well. Usually an app only looks right in one way. The market itself only displays in Landscape. Summary: Unfortunately I end up using the older iPad more than the Tab and now that I have had it for a while I wish I would have returned the Galaxy and spent the little extra for an iPad 2. I say that even before considering that the tablet died within 3 months of purchasing it. I hope that the experience improves but as it is right now it falls far short of its primary competition.
My Tab is my first tablet/ miniature computer type thing. I bought it to compliment my aging laptop, and it has practically replaced my laptop. I'm a student and the Tab makes keeping in touch very easy. It's very sleek and light. I have small hands and the tablet is easy to hold for long periods of time. I use it primarily to read and I love its shape for that. Reading academic PDFs on the Tab is very easy! The speakers are great (for a little device) and the standard apps it comes with are nice. The customer service guy on the phone was great! I gave it a lower rating on performance because of a couple of factors. The digital keyboard is not very responsive and can make typing a drag. Sometimes the screen is not very responsive either. I did wish there was an SD card slot, but then I installed Dropbox and that solved storage problems. Also, the app market is a little disappointing, but that's not the Tab's fault... nor is the lack of pretty accessories like the other (major) competitor has... but hope springs eternal.
