It has an overflow channel on the front which lets the water out the front with nowhere to go , it should have an overflow hose connection on the sides so that one can channel the overflow away from the house. This is the only flaw in design.
The rain barrels are basically perfect. The barrel comes with just about everything you need to set it up. The bug screen is screwed down on top and must be removed to get the hardware parts that are stored inside. I only knocked off a star because two of the three I ordered came with the hardware floating loosely inside and the plumbers tape in a wadded up mess. I think they had been previously opened and not repackaged properly. Hayneedle's customer service was excellent. I had some difficulty with Fed Ex, and the staff at Hayneedle helped to intercede so that the barrels would be delivered at a time when I could receive them.
Would be nice if the drain valve and tape would stay in plastic bag that is way to flimsy to hold anything. Had to turn upside down and dig out valve.
We just had our first rain since installing this great looking rain barrel. (We have two other barrels of a different design) The water can't go through the top screen fast enough to enable the water to go into the barrel, so the majority of the water went into the plant holder and shot out the back planter drain holes or overflowed off the front. While our other two barrels filled in a short time, there is very little water INSIDE this barrel. So it will require some amendments including an overflow hole and hose and a different entrance/screening mechanism in order to function.
I love the look of the rain barrel compared to the other traditional looks. I purchased mine in early spring 2013 and set it up myself, with some assistance from my husband. I does need a stand which I purchase matching pavers that complements it well. We have had so much rain all spring and summer it has been put to good use! When it is full it kinda bubbles out and looks a little funny, I don't mind as long as it doesn't damage it over time. -I have had two issues with the barrel. 1. The barrel is not set up with any over flow design. 1/2 hour steady rain fills 55 gallons for me. There are two small holes in the back, so I rigged it with a small hose to drain back down the drain. If it is a hard rain it can't keep up, but I have not had any flooding issues yet. 2. The spigot just started to give me issues. I'm not sure yet if it has a small stone stuck in the spigot or if it went bad. I still need to take it apart once it is drained again. I may call the company and see about them sending me a new spigot. All in all I really want this rain barrel to work out. Our neighbors have complemented how nice it looks. I hope to purchase two more by next year!
