Warning! Do not purchase this bike or any other item offered by OJ Commerce. I bought this bike for my 83 year old grandfather. After reading other reviews on this bike we decided to return it and the seller required us to ship it back to them. Shipping cost more than half the price of the bike($384.17 to be exact) Horrible company and even more horrible return policy. They give no indication that this is their return policy before purchasing. When you shop on Walmart.com you imagine that the return policy will be easy to work with but not this one. Beware!!!
I need to take off the left crank arm so i can install a pedal assist device for my electric motor. the nut came right off but the crank arm does not. I did not want to force it. please tell me how to do this. PS, love the trike ! ======================================== Thank you for contacting Schwinn. To remove the crank of your bike, you will need to purchase a crank remover tool. You can purchase this at any local bicycle shop. Please note that putting a motor on your bike will void the warranty that comes with the bike. The frame and parts are not safety tested to be operated with a motor. Thank you, Amber ========================================== i already called and was told by SCHWINN tech the crank shaft has a spline. it does not. there seems to be a flare with a notch that locks in when the nut is torqued on. as far as the motor goes, IT GOES ! the trike has 1 gear. it should have 3. like the trike but with 1 speed it is not practical for anything more than a very short ride on level ground. maybe if the 1 gear was higher ?
some of the other reviews said it was difficult to understand the directions. i had no problems with it.my problem was the rear brakes. the brake drum was loose on the sprocket axle, so I thought it was defective. i had put it together to the point of adjusting brakes and had to remove the whole drive assembly to get it apart. turned out it was just loose. tightened it up by turning the drum tight on the threads. worked fine. if you have this problem, simply turn drive wheel in forward direction while holding brake lever down.it will tighten up. otherwise, went together fine. trike is pretty decent. worth the money.my dog[ boston terrier]fits the basket well and size adjustments are easy. tool list says you need pliers able to cut wire. only reason I can think of why is you might want to trim brake cable. really not needed. larger size phillip head screwdriver is recommended. adjustable wrench is needed. also hex wrench. only needed help in putting drive axle on frame and that very sparingly.
The instructions recommends two people assemble the bike, which is a good suggestion. The assembly instructions are mostly complete but require some interpretation. The bolts and nuts required come mostly installed in the holes so you don't need to worry about losing parts while you are assembling the bike. The most confusing part of assembly is getting the brakes adjusted correctly. Although the brakes seem to work fine, I didn't do much adjustment on them. One problem I had was after completing assembly, the drive wheel rubbed on the fender. After some tweaking of the fender, I discovered the wheel was out of round. I removed the wheel and took it to my neighborhood bike shop to see if they could fix it. They said because it was the drive wheel that had the half mood hub, they didn't have the proper tool to balance the wheel. They said to bring the whole trike in and they would attempt to balance it on the trike. They were able to fix it and all was fine after that. My Wife took a while to get the hang of riding a 3 wheeler as the steering is a little different that a bicycle. She is fine now and likes the trike.
I haven't ridden a bike for almost 15 years, so this is a real treat for me! I had the bike delivered to my local store. I called and arranged for them to assemble it at no charge. The bike arrived 2 days before expected and was ready for pick-up in 2 days. The pick-up procedure couldn't have gone smoother! It is fun to ride and I feel a sense of freedom I haven't felt for quite some time. You will need a little time to get used to the wide turning radius, and I keep running over my left foot when I am walking the bike, but I expect to get used to it soon!
