I tried the Brother version of a simple (beginner style) sewing machine, but returned. Then bought this Singer Vivo and am very happy. I grew up on Singer and I just wanted a light weight simple machine at this point of my life (62yrs). This machine has everything you can get on much more expensive machines, but Singer is reliable and very straight forward for ease of use. I would recommend this Singer Vivo.

I bought this as my first sewing machine. I did not want to spend a ton of money if I did not know how I would like sewing. Well, I was returning it to the store within 48 hours. Out of the box it was great, fast setup, easy to thread, and simple to use. The problem was the tread kept on breaking. At first I thought I threaded it wrong, or the tension was too tight. But I would sew about 5" and the thread would break. There are only 2 speeds, slow and fast you cannot control it anymore. I would not even recommend this to a child. Spend the extra $20 and by the Brothers. I returned this one, got the Brothers XL6210 and I love it!!!

I was So excited to get this machine, and was Very happy with the price, but like they say, you get what you pay for! String kept breaking after a few stitches and I would have to re-thread it, after the 5th time, I simply gave up and returning it today.

I initially purchased the Vivo to make one small repair to a curtain panel. Since I assumed I would rarely use the machine, price was the main selling point; The other selling point was appearance. The Vivo was the cheapest thing on the aisle that appeared less like a bedazzled toy and more like a real sewing machine. The Vivo appeared solid despite the hot-orange, swooshy theme (apparently all sewing machine manufacturers are under the impression that men are brut ogres and only Victorian women sew, almost all newer sewing machines are sporting a stereotypical feminine, sparkly, floral, day-glo or otherwise whimsical themes). Setting up the Vivo was easy enough. The instructions were clear and it took me less than 20 minutes to complete the whole threading process and sew my first stitch. It took me another 10 minutes to replace the broken needle and rethread the machine correctly, however, before I could sew a second stitch. I found the problem to be in the tensioner, I had threaded through the little hook shaped plastic bit instead of simply wrapping the thread under it. I still don't know what the hook looking thing is for. In any case, it took only a minute to get the tension figured out and I have been sewing ever since! After repairing the curtain panel that I originally purchased the Vivo for, I've gone on to sew three complete sets of lined drapes, two valances, two shower curtains, and dozens of odd repairs to clothing. The Vivo has not only held up to all this sewing, its done so without major error or complaint and has twice over paid for itself! The only problem I have had is an occasional uneven bit of stitches. It doesn't happen often, and when it does it is only for an inch or two then it will begin placing the stitches correctly again. When I first noticed this I thought I was pulling on the needle but, no. In any case, it's hardly noticeable and I usually just keep on sewing. Pros: It sews. It's inexpensive. It has enough basic stitches to do basic sewing without a bunch of fancy options and doo-dads to confuse, confound and tempt me! Cons: Only two speeds... both too fast for curves. Cheap foot pedal. Cheap LED light.
