Originally released in 1998 by Image Entertainment, Sixteen Candles is now back in the hands of Universal and is re-released on DVD. While this disc is a marked improvement in many ways over that first outing, it's not without its downside. The 1.85:1 anamorphic (the original release was not anamorphic) is far better than previously available. Colors are wonderfully translated from an older print, just going to show what a little restoration work can do. Detail and skin tones are also right on target, which is refreshing to see. The sound is also an improvement, though not one of great significance. In a surprising move, both 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS tracks are offered, but hardly have the change to be fully utilized, as the re-mastered sound didn't have much to work with in the first place. Dialogue is clear, and little more could be asked for in this small comedy. Where the disc really falters, as did the original, is supplements, which are non-existent. While it seems odd that nothing exists or could be produced to add extra value to this disc, only those involved can answer why nothing is offered.
