When I first received this carseat, my reaction was to return it. I felt there wasn't enough side and head protection. However, that changed once my son actually sat in it. When seated, my son looked comfortable and the seat fit much better once he was strapped in. The side and head protection now looked adequate. So, I would advise you to try it for a week before making a final decision. This seat would not install tightly using LATCH in my 2003 Altima, so I had to use the seatbelt. My husband and my 4 year old son (whom I purchased the seat for; He weighs 38 lbs and is 39 inches tall) immediately loved the seat. My husband liked the sturdiness and weight of the seat. My son loved the idea of how easy it is to get in and out of the seat. He also stated that the seat was very comfortable and that he didn't feel "squished" ( My son has broad shoulders). We have had this seat for a week now, and have taken a short trip so I could see how well he sleeps in it. My son's head does sometimes comfortably rest on the side , but there was a point where his head flopped forward--and I hate that! But I do not think having the Radian 80 with the head wings would have prevented the head flopping with my son because his head usually flops forward and not sideways. So, I would recommend this carseat for an older child-say ages 3+. I will be purchasing another when my daughter turns 3.
We had an Alpha Omega Elite and a Cosco convertible. But with baby #3 on the way, we needed car seats that were more narrow so that we could fit three in the back seat of our Ford Edge. Even with a Graco booster and seat belt extender, we could not get our daughter buckled in the booster with our three car seats in the back. After a long period of research, we decided on the Radian 65. What a blessing these seats are! We purchased two of them, one for our two 1/2 year old and one for our four year old. Since these don't use the vehicle seat belts and because they are much more narrow than most other car seats, we can now fit two of these and our Graco infant car seat in the back row together! Great buy, worth the money! I suggest starting out with this seat if you have enough room to use it rear facing, or just use this seat when baby outgrows the normal infant seats! EXCELLENT! Saved us tons of $$$ since we no longer need to purchase a new vehicle!
This seat is great. I ordered for my Daycare provider that needed to fit 3 seats across her back row. The seat I had was over 4 inches wider than this one. This seat is very sturdy (heavy, made of steel) and appears to not sacrife safety for it's narrow design. I have it rear-facing for a 7 month old. He loves the seat and sleeps very well in it. We also plan on taking it with us on trips because it does fold down easy.
I bought this for my granddaughter's first birthday. We sat it out in the living room, and we had a hard time getting her out of it to put it in her mom's car. Her dad got it in, took a little while, adjusting the straps and all, but wow!, is it secure, nothing is going to move that seat! It's a very secure feeling knowing my granddaughter is safe while traveling 6 hours to see us!! She loves being able to sit face forward, seeing her parents! And mom and dad love it!!!
I chose this car seat for 2 main reasons: first it is rated the best convertible car seat for 2008 when tested for dangerous chemical content (so there is minimal concern for toxic off-gassing) and second the frame is made of sturdy metal rather than plastic like most others - which makes it far safer in my mind. My little guy (7 mos.) likes being able to see more things compared to when he was in his infant carrier and it's much easier to get him in and out of it. Its slim size fits nicely into my 2009 Jetta with plenty of room for others in the back seat. I'm very happy with my purchase...
