Sony has a long history of making "our way or the highway" products that are incompatible with anything but their own operating systems. Rather than "plug and play" this recorder can only play with Windoze computers...not Linux...not Mac. So while it says it has USB cables and you can upload files to your computer for burning CD/DVD backups, etc., that ONLY applies to Windoze users. If you have a Mac or a Linux or any other iOS, beOS, Android equipment you would like to move the audio files from this unit into, FORGET IT. Without Windoze this equipment cannot handshake with anything on earth. It seems strange that SONY would tie its future to Microsoft so exclusively...but I guess it works for them...it does cut out some market share that they COULD have captured. But I think there is a corporate monolith that is incapable of comprehending market diversity and the advantage it might afford the bottom line for SONY. I'm only able to use this once in awhile because of its incompatibility. I would use it a lot more if it weren't so limited!!

I am a Pastor and I used a small (obsolete) 256meg mp3 player to record my teachings and to listen to teaching from other Bible teachers. This unit was great but the memory size and not having a built in speaker were a problem at times. This Sony has a gig of memory and with the quality setting adjustments, I can load many more teachings onto it and have plenty of room to record my own. I still haven't learned how to use all the functions it has but it is much easier to navigate through the menus than the older one I used. I don't know how good music sounds when down loaded but on the hq setting, it sounds very clean when using headphones. I just wish I had ordered it from this site as I could have saved a few bucks. The built in mic will pick up all around the room but if it is important to pick up the voices of others in the room, don't turn on the vor function. I tested using it that way to record a table discussion and the people that don't speak up loud enough don't activate it. They do, however, get picked up while in the normal mode. The old Iriver recorder I was using set me back over twice as much as this little beauty. I feel it is a very good value for so much versatility.

Good catch of voice even low voices from some good distance. Its not that small in size. hate it has AAA batteries hope it would have lithium battery. Buy it if you really need it. You wont repent after buying for sure.

A very good value for the price. bought for Mom's BDAY. To record oral histories(she's 85). I think it will serve my purpose well. Long recording time , can download on to computer with enclosed cables- nothing EXTRA to buy!

Nice compact design. Easy to use. Picks up sound to be recorded without any problems. Plenty of room to record. Bought it for my husband and he really likes it. Best price around is at Walmart.
