The Ferengi have taken control of an old Starfleet vessel and wish to return the ship to the Federation. To Picard's (Patrick Stewart) amazement, the vessel is his old ship the Stargazer, which he captained nine years earlier in the legendary battle of Maxia. But unbeknownst to Picard, the Stargazer contains a mind-altering device planted by Ferengi captain Bok, whose son was killed during the Maxian conflict. Seeking revenge for his son's death, Bok uses the device to inflict severe mental pain on Picard, forcing the captain to relive the horrors of Maxia. Then Data (Brent Spiner) discovers Stargazer records revealing Picard may have fired on an innocent Ferengi ship during the battle. Now Picard may have to face charges of war crime...if he survives.
