Kirk's reputation and career are at stake when he faces a "court-martial" for negligence that resulted in the death of a crew member. Trek Trivia Elisha Cook (Samuel T. Cogley) was cast against type to play an attorney... he was well known for playing tough guys in such films as The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep. Richard Webb (Lieutenant Commander Ben Finney) was TV's Captain Midnight. The beautiful matte paintings of Starbase 11 were also used in The Menagerie, as were the sets for Commodore Stone's office and the courtroom (the episodes were filmed back-to-back).
