I've been using STP High Viscosity Oil Treatment for many years, especially on flat tappet engines where there's inherently more metal-to-metal contact. Back in the 1990s, motor oils contained higher levels of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), which served as a critical first line of defense against that kind of wear. Today's oils have far less ZDDP—not because it's ineffective, but because it can shorten catalytic converter life, and modern engines simply don't require as much due to lower internal friction and thinner viscosities designed to meet CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards. Most people will say adding anything to oil is a waste of money. Personally, I see this as a little bit of extra insurance for engines that are closer in design to racing applications. Yes, you could run a dedicated racing oil with higher ZDDP content for even more protection, but this is a quick, simple option—especially when topping off between oil changes. I also keep straight ZDDP on hand for certain situations, but STP High Viscosity Oil Treatment remains my go-to for ease of use. They even make a high-mileage version for engines with oil leaks or seepage, but since that's not an issue for me, I stick to the standard formula. For flat tappet engines in particular, this product has earned its place in my garage.
