I bought 3 different gates at the same time. 1 was very attractive, but had a piece on the bottom for support that I tripped on, the other very plain but again piece on bottom for support I tripped on. This one does not have that swings open nicely and I am going to buy 2 more! I will sell the other 2 to make up for loss.
The gate worked well for one day just screwed into our drywall with the materials that came in the box. Then, the side that holds the gate came completely out of the wall. We had to go buy drywall anchors, take all the pieces out of the wall, and screw all the screws into the anchors instead of straight into the drywall. No problems since we put the anchors in. I'm only giving 3 stars because the manufacturer should know that drywall anchors are needed. If a child had been pushing on the gate without the anchors, they could've possibly knocked the gate out of the wall. With the anchors, it's pretty sturdy.
We needed a gate for the top and bottom of our stairs and this gate works great. We have a wide hallway and even when expanding the gate to it's widest setting it was not quite big enough. We added a small block of wood to the wall that made it fit and now it works great. It is easy to open and close while holding my son.
I purchased this gate to keep the dog from going into another room. Past gates I have used all were ok but all were tension-mounted gates which have the bar across the bottom. Both my wife and I were constantly tripping over this bar. That this gate had no tension mount bar was the feature that decided my purchase. Also the price was quite reasonable, actually less than most tension-mounted child gates. The other feature is that this gate is solid, not like the accordion-style expanding-retracting gates, which can pinch fingers and by design are flimsy. To this end, this gate meets all my expectations. It's solid and strong, adjusts perfectly to any door frame, is permanently mounted so it won't slip like tension gates, and has no bar across the bottom to trip over. The gate locks and releases easily and smoothly, and the dog hasn't figured out how to open it like he has with the child gates. Installation was fairly easy, with good instructions. I recommend you use a small hand or power drill to make the screw holes. One problem I encountered was that the width of the mounting pieces is wider than the templates. I had placed the templates on the door jamb, marked and drilled the holes, only to find that the mounting pieces of the latch assembly would not fit into the door jamb and I had to add a piece of wood to the jamb to accommodate the wider mounting pieces and re-drill the screw holes. Had the templates been actual size width-wise I would have caught this. So if you buy this gate, make sure the mounting pieces fit where you want to place them before drilling the holes. My wife likes the gate so much, she wants me to buy more and replace the other tension-mounted gates we are using.
We love this gate! The step by step directions and template for installation made it so easy to set up. It is the perfect gate for the top of our stairs. It is easy to open one-handed, and there is nothing to step over on your way through. It fits in our uneven opening (between a wall and a banister) with coving around the bottom. We like the looks of the gate so much we may leave it as a permanent fixture when our children are grown.
