The bottom of this pot is not flat, so I'm returning a second pot after hoping to reorder and get a non-defective one. It seems like the letters in the casting are higher than the bottom of the pot, which means it will not sit flat on a smooth cook top stove. So in addition to an annoying slight wobble, it's obviously not going to get good heat transfer all the way across the bottom. I also bought a 3 QT braiser of the same make and color, and it's perfectly fine.
this is the second time i have ordered this product.last year i got one for my girlfriend who is a great cook and she loves it,,,this year i got one for my sister as a birthday gift..she used it the next day and she wants to get one for her daughter,,,great product...anyone who likes to cook will love it.....
I already had a 6.5 one and love it. It is great for making large amounts that I freeze. But too big for 2 - 4 so I got the 3.5 quart and I'm equally happy with it. I would recommend both sizes to everyone. The price is so reasonable you can't go wrong.
I am really pleased with this dutch oven. It is the perfect size for me. I live alone, but even if I need to cook for 4 or 6 it will probably be fine. It's great for soups, deep frying, making stews, roasts or used in the oven. Because the knob on the lid is not metal, the instructions say not to use over 400 degrees in the oven. No problem for me as I will be slow roasting at around 300 degrees. Would recommend this even if you have a larger Dutch oven.
Cooks Illustrated gives this dutch oven a big thumbs up and for me, someone who doesn't want to spend $275 on the "real deal," that's great! BUT, I bought it primarily to make Jim Lahey's No Work Bread which requires, overall, about 1 1/2 hrs. at 450 degrees. The manufacturer rates the plastic knob safe up to that temperature, but my hunch is they don't rate it for a sustained 450 since it was showing signs of degradation after just one loaf. I think they can do better than the current plastic knob. However, if you won't be cooking at 450, you will have yourself a perfect dutch oven!
