This is a pretty impressive machine with lots of special features such as a timer if you only want to use it part time. Two parts can be cleaned and one has permanent filter. You can’t be lazy about taking care of it. Follow directions carefully and insert filters when unit arrives. Plastic bag with filters in package.

I honestly don’t know that it does anything but light up and move air. There’s been no improvement in the months since I bought it that I can attribute to the device, itself… It really just collects dust from the air. I haven’t changed either of the filters since I bought it - it doesn’t look like they need it and the thing hasn’t told me they should be. I’ve wiped down the preliminary filter once, but otherwise, it seems to be just another appliance to perform a questionable service that would truly be better served by plain common sense, a slightly damp rag and a schedule. Granted: I can’t test my air before and after use to be certain of anything other than that, looking back, I could have saved that money and bought a box fan and draped a moist towel over the back to catch the dust and dog and cat hair.

I purchased the Winix 5500-2 air purifier after I saw it in my doctor’s office. I had asked my doctor why they chose this particular purifier and was told that one of the filters was washable and you only needed to replace the other filter once a year. The Winix 5500-2 is highly rated and it’s quiet even when running at the highest speed. In the month I’ve had it I’ve noticed much less dust on my furniture and less allergy related stuffiness in my family. I have the purifiers running all the time and didn’t notice a change in my gas/electric bill. I have purchased a second Winix 5500-2 for my 1000sqft home (one upstairs and one downstairs). I had 3 Holmes aer purifiers and didn’t notice any difference in either the dust on my furniture or allergies running them. I changed the expensive filters religiously without noticeable results. In Northern California we have been plagued by wildfires over the last few years and I didn’t feel the Holmes purifiers made a difference in the air quality.

If you have owned one of the smaller air filter units and were disappointed with it's performance this will prove to be a berth of fresh air. I am a smoker and my home no longer smells like an ashtray. This is a very high quality unit and the actual activated carbon Christal filter instead of foam with carbon dust in it is washable and really does remove odors. Combined with the true HEPA filter and PlasmaWave technology it really is an air purifier not just a filter. The box arrived FedEx with out a scratch or ding (Thank you guys and gals at FedEx) and every one else that handled it. At this price I plan to buy additional units for other rooms rather than a larger over priced unit. It is a bit loud in turbo mode but not annoying. In the lower speeds I don't even notice it's there.

We have two of these now. They’re awesome! These filters are no joke in that they remove an incredible amount of stuff from the air. I like that you have a pre-filter as well as an odor filter - and then you have the HEPA filter as well! The units are quiet. We keep the plasma wave off. We use a piece of paper over the light on the front of the device. That may be the only drawback (that the light doesn’t turn off), but it’s quite minor. I’ve owned the number of the filtrete units and a Dyson. This brand is far better in my opinion.
