This model carrier has a stiffening spine at the top. The spine is tucked into a sleeve or pocket at both ends (see photo). The spine has a way of coming out of the sleeve. Not dangerous but it pokes out at the carrier ends and allows it to collapse. This is a flaw in the deign. The quality of material and assembly was satisfactory. The floor panel was too long and made zipping close difficult. I returned it.

This carrier is NOT able to accommodate dogs up to 16 pounds. My dog is only 5 and it was too little for her. We returned it for the medium size and it is still tiny but able to fit her. The bed itself is nice, she likes the fur in the bottom and sturdy for carrying but the size/pounds for the animal is inaccurate.

My 10 lb cat technically fits in this carrier, but she absolutely hates it! It's smaller than the cardboard carrier I was given to take her home in, which she scratched her way out of in about 5 minutes. I've tried a few times to get her into it, but even though she's very accommodating and bribing her with turkey (her favorite) she WILL NOT go in. The picture is very misleading, there's no way a chihuahua has that much room in the small carrier. Maybe if you have a teacup pet, you might want this. But go with the medium.
