I bought a Thermo-Pond cone heater 5 years ago, and and very pleased with it. It only uses 100 watts an still keeps an opening in the ice even after a foot of snow. This heater vents the gasses that get trapped under ice and works fine for non koi fish. The koi need a bigger melted opening I'm getting another for a smaller upper filtering pond. this will vent that one for the smaller comets in there to eat mosquitoes, and will turn the area around the heater into a bird watering hole for the season.
This heater works in the worst weather to keep open air supply to pond, keeping fish alive and letting birds and wildlife and feral cats have a source of drinking water. It needs to be replaced every few years but I suppose that is because it works in such hard conditions. One very good feature is that it will melt through the ice overnight if you don't put it in soon enough or it has to be replaced in midwinter. I had another type before this that used much more electricity and was much harder to clean in spring. You just wipe this off with scrubby sponge. This is my 4th or 5th one. I am very satisfied.
Fits my needs for a 160 gal pre-formed garden pond (holding 2 dz gold fish, with moderate vegetation), with waterfall. I bought this pond de-icer to replace a 250 watt de-icer that had exposed heating elements. With this new investment, the elements are not exposed, eliminating the wear from lime build up and lifespan of the unit.

This small pond heater keeps an area from freezing just slightly larger than itself. That is exactly what I wanted for my pond. The small wattage of the heating element does not have a great impact on the electric bill either.

The price was right. I had Walmart ship it to the location of the closest Walmart to my house. I was contacted a couple days after I placed the order, saying it arrived. The store had a pickup section where my item was waiting. It was quick and convenient and hassle free. The item worked as described. I was very pleased.
