The manual ward actually good for me. It taught me exactly the times ways and reasons I would and could use all the different stitches. Very useful. Also it gave exact settings to put dials to the right numbers to get stitches to look and work the way I wanted. And the machine does what I want :) I like the solid interface and how you work the thread through the machine. The different attachments actual work nice too.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product for free from Brother in exchange for my honest opinion/review of the the product. I have been a seamstress for about 40 years. I find that Brother Strong & Tough is a very nice sewing machine, well made and sturdy. I watched some YouTube videos to learn about the basics of this machine, such as threading and bobbin winding. I find it takes a little practice to become familiar with it. I am especially pleased with the needle threader, something my other machine doesn't have. I also like the portability. I am having fun using this sewing machine and learning about the different functions, 53 built in stitches, button holes and button sewing. This machine is designed to do heavy duty stitching, it can tackle several layers of heavy blue jean fabric. I have tested it on stiff, tough fabrics and it sews through them without a problem. I find the foot pedal to be light weight and it slides on my hardwood floor. I might attach a non-slip material underneath it. It would be nice to have a magnetic area somewhere on the machine to hold pins.
Bought this machine for price not expecting it to do more than mending. Boy was I wrong!! Seven years later after making outdoor curtains for large covered porch, upholstered numerous outdoor chair cushions with cording using heavy duty Sunbrella fabric, many many double sided flannel blankets for homeless shelters, and day-to-day projects my machine is still going. My fear now is my machine breaking.

I am a complete novice, but it's something I always wanted to learn. It's very easy to use with what I attempted. It's a little intimidating at first but I was able to complete a few things and get the learning experience started. I highly recommend trying this model and if need be, I would definitely buy again.
I purchased this machine to replace a Singer I had for 40 years! Everything was different from threading to bobbin winding and placement. The included DVD did not work and the manual was not much help. However, after struggling at first, I learned to use the machine and am pleased.
I bought this as a replacement for a Brother I bought over 20 years ago. Actually I bought another "HEAVY DU T Y" machine that was horrible. I returned that and went back to Brother. Anyway I needed something that can handle multiple layers of materials, sometimes up to 6 layers as well as Denim. I have used it on the multiple layers but haven't tackled Denim yet. So far this machine is doing much better then I expected. I love the needle threader! My only complaint is that I haven't been able to find an extension table for this model.
This is my first sewing machine, and this model is extremely easy to set up and use. Making bobbins is a breeze, and the instruction manual is very useful for selecting stitches for various fabrics and notions. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the thread can slip out of the needle very easily, which is a little annoying, but the threader is very easy to use.
I am a hobbiest and have used the ST531HD for almost 2 years. I am an engineer and design equipment for industrial purposes. Through normal use the plastic tensioning fang on the threader broke. The reversing lever, for back stitching, also cracked. I was able to epoxy both broken parts back together however a “strong and tough” machine should be designed with thick enough plastic (or metal) to withstand normal use. Brother should also offer replacement parts to owners and NOT just dealers. The cost of service approached the machine value.
It's great when it works but mostly it randomly sews in reverse with no way of correcting this issue
