The P800 arrived in excellent condition. Setup was easy and it followed the included instructions to the tee. I've only printed a few test sheets, nothing heavy yet so I will update this review as I put it through the paces. I read many many (did I already say many?) reviews leading up to this purchase so I was a bit nervous when it arrived. Some folks say they had issues with setup, others had feed issues, etc. Most we're positive so I took the plunge. It's an expensive item but hopefully well worth the expenditure. Like with many in my position (wanting to purchase a professional grade photo printer), it came down to the P800 or the Canon P1000. Both look to be amazing printers but it came down to the roll capability of the P800 along with a bit lower price tag. More positive reviews for the P800 as well. So not having used either, I made my choice using advertised capability, many user reviews, and YouTube videos. And I have to say the look of this beast played a small role as well. As a side note, I was a bit concerned that this model has been on the market going on 6 years and new hardware and ink technology would be out shortly. I contacted Epson directly about my concern and they said they have no such plans in the pipeline. My hope is that I have many years of amazing prints. I will update this review (if able) when I get some more ink through the tubes! Kurt
This is the primary printer for Images Linked, LLC. No other desktop printer comes close to the resolution and cost effectiveness of the SureColor P800. Having this printer is as valued as my Nikon gear.
I went digital in 1990 so you can only image how many printers I have bought until now. I own an Epson 7900 printer which is good for 24" wide printing but not so easy to use with smaller prints. After seeing this printer at the WPPI convention in Las Vegas, I decided to buy this model. It was the easiest printer I have ever set up in my life!! The first test print came out perfect and now I am ready to make this machine pay for its price. Could not be happier. Will have to wait several months to see how it holds up but am feeling confident in the quality I see in it now.
I have been using Epson printers for probably 20 years or more since having a service issue with Canon, Inc. with one of theirs. Having discovered that many printing companies have started using the Epson print heads, I decided to give them a try... I never looked back. We have a family of accomplished photographers. I was a mentor for my Wife and my Sister and I got her husband into photography. Now we all use Epson printers. She's using the P400 while I just got the P800 and our images win awards everywhere we show them.
The craftsmanship of the printer is superb. The print quality, superb. The instructions superb. There isn't a single thing wrong with this printer. It's a professional quality printer at a very affordable price. Worth twice the cost.
Background: I'm a retired professional fine art printmaker and have made my living reproducing art for galleries and museums for the last 35 years. Epson printers have been my mainstay since the 90s. I've owned and used just about every 44 inch printer Epson has made. When it came time to set up a home studio to print my own art, I chose a Epson SureColor 800. This is an impressive little printer. The print quality equals and often exceeds the 9900 and 9890. The build is as hearty as it's big brothers but sits perfectly on my desktop. The heads never seem to clog despite only being used once or twice a week. And, best of all, my prints sell at the gallery! Wonderful little printer: highly recommended!
Finally Epson Built a Printer with outstanding print quality, color accuracy, detail and build quality. Much like the ole Epson Stylus Photo 2200 that has been a "Workhorse" for may Professional Photographer print portfolios of years past. I have owned this P800 for almost 3 months. I have printed just under 100 images... most of the print sizes have been 17x22, 13x19 and a few prints that have been 60 inches long. I have printed on Epson: Luster, Glossy Metallic, Matte, Ex Watercolor textured also Red River Papers: Glossy Metallic, Polar Matte, Enhanced Matte all with no issues. Rolls and sheets, mostly rolls though... I has been reliable and consistent ... I am on a MacPro(2012) connected to the printer thru its ethernet option. I will point out that printing a photo just for fun from the Epson iPhone app over wifi, I was a really surprised by the B&W tonality achieved thru the epson app conversion it applied to a photo from my iphone photo library. I am Happy with this P800 and I am looking forward to many years of high quality printing from it!
From the perspective of a professional photographer, the P800 is a fantastic tool that makes me more money. Setup was very easy: remove 1,000 pieces of tape, install the ink and run through a quick 5 min ink loading process and a sample print page. That's it. I do recommend using a USB cable instead of wifi as it prints about twice as quickly. I haven't done my own printing in probably 10 years so I was very surprised at how good the in-printer color management is. If you have a calibrated monitor results will be very close to what you see on screen. The whole process is very fast. Speaking of speed, this thing prints fast! At 1440 dpi with high speed on, 8 1/2x11 prints are done in about 90 seconds. High speed looses a very minor amount of detail in the shadows so I only use it if I'm proofing but it's not so much I think any client would notice. For prints larger than 8x10 I print at 2880 dpi with high speed off for maximum quality (and quality is stunning) but 8x10 and smaller make no noticeable difference to the naked eye of clients. It's not a small printer by any means so you will need some room for it but compared to the darkroom I grew up with it's a compact way to get display quality prints to clients in minutes. Overall, very pleased as quality is superb, speed is much better than expected and my clients LOVE seeing printed proofs which increases my sales.
I've been owning this printer for over a year and I must say I am impressed with the results of my prints every time. I am a part time photographer and I also use a benq 2700pt and a colormunki photo calibrator. With that said, I get accurate prints every time good or bad. If there is an imperfection in a photo you edit, for example if your background is suppose to be pure white but there is a slight mark of a light gray it will show in your print so make sure you view all your photos at 100% before printing. It does BW, high contrast, low contrast, high saturation, purposely dull etc photos beautifully. The prints are stunning. I've read that some people have issues with clogging after a week or 2 of no printing, I've only had that issue once but it was a couple months of not printing. I simply cleaned the nozzles once and it was fine after. Now is it perfect...no. I use the roll feed and if the paper isnt perfectly straight you'll have a hard time getting it to feed. If you leave the paper in the feeder for a day your first print will have an indention. It's not major but it is noticeable. If there's a speck of dust on the paper when printing it will show. I'm sure that is with all printers. I keep it and the roll completely covered even while printing. I did replace it twice which is frustrating. The ink cover door latch malfunctioned, I received a refurbished replacement and the roll paper feeder was damaged. I received the replacements within about 3 days. Also I use two monitors but my Benq monitor interferes with the wifi of the printer so I use the usb. Would I still recommend this printer...OF COURSE. For the money the results are worth the minor hiccups if you get any.
Seems well built and single sheet feeder much improved. Planned to buy roll sheet feeder but a number of other reviewers caution about weak supports that are easily broken. Manual is incomplete, for example does not mention how to feed Epson canvas papers.
