I was a little aprehensive about spending this much for a GPS with numerous reviews on sites claiming that the Colorado 400t is too complicated. I received and have now tested my Colorado 400t and love the features. Yes it is packed with features but with the wheel and a few minutes to learn your way around, it is easy. Once you learn your way around with the tool, the features add alot of interesting things to explore.
My primary use for this devise is for Geocaching, and the Colorado was a real disappointment right out of the box. The resolution went down to 80 feet, not the 20 I was used to, and I could not see geocaches on the map. When I found a geocache, I couldn't mark it as found on the unit! AND street names were not displayed, so navigation was difficult. A big step backward. However, a quick search through the discussion boards revealed that there was a software update, and when I put that on, all of this was corrected. Now it's terriffic - exactly what I wanted. So my only real complaint is that Garmin continues with their software problems - but this stuff works great!
Love the way this GPS comes up with very accurate positions. I was able to get my hunting and hiking areas here in the mountains of Colorado. The Rollback price made this a very good value. My only dislike was the lack of examples to follow in the instructions. I had to hunt & miss till I got it right. I would highly recommend this GPS otherwise.
I'm a fire fighter and I use my gps for work. This has preloaded maps in the most remote areas. The features on the Colorado make it easy to do my job. The only draw backs are the short battery life and the 3D feature does't look as good as avertised. It also takes 1 to 2 minutes to lock in when turned off, but I will take these minor gliches for the huge upside. It really is ready to go right out of the box. I bought the Magellen Triton but retured it because it had no maps except for major cities. That was the best decision I ever made.
The Garmin Colorado 400t is an amazing device. It does much more than track your location, such as geocaching and a photo viewer. The only downfall is that it's menue system is slightly harder to use to find certain functions, such as to save a track or to find the satalite screen. Other than a few misplaced items, the unit is amazing. I used it on a recent backpacking trip which took us off of the trail and through some incredibly dense timber, but the GPS never lost reception! In fact, it is the only reason that we made it to our destination without some major side trips! All in all, it is an amazing unit (with a few minor quirks here and there), and I would definately recommend it to any outdoor adventurer.
This is the best GPS I have ever used, and I have had experience with 5 others. If you are a hunter, fisherman or just love the outdoors, get the 400T model. It comes pre loaded with topo maps for the whole USA!! The other brands make you downlown maps and you can normally only get a small area. I am very computer literate and could not understand how to download maps and had to call for assistance, and that did not help either.
You can't find this cheaper or from a more reliable retailer! $100 less than any retailer I've ever heard of! Love this GPS! Order City Navigator map to make this the ultimate GPS. Point to Point navigation for backpacking, Turn by Turn navigation in your vehicle. Works great for both.
This thing rocks. This GPS makes geocaching (high tech treasure hunting), sooo easy now! Easly navigate between screens and quickly find your way around the unit with little trial and error.
I have been using this for about 3 weeks now just for geocaching and it is awesome. I love the paperless caching, having all the clues and past logs right there on your gps is great. A must have for any serious geocacher.
Some of the menus are a bit cumbersome but overall the Colorado works very well. Battery life is sort of mediocre, especially if your using the backlighting. It feels like a solid piece of equipment and is very comfortable in your hand. The click-wheel is easy to use, even if you only have one hand free. This was by far the best price I found as well - or I might have bought a lesser one rather than laying down the $600 I saw on every other site & store I checked!
