I only tried this machine a couple of times but I would give it 4 1/2 stars. It prints brochures and photos like a dream and even "to-the-edge" prints. The only con that I would have is that tray #2 can only be programmed to use plain paper. It is absolutely idiot proof to set up with wi-fi and air-print. The size is nice (about half the size of color laser printers
The machine works well - copies, printing, scans and two sided of each. Two paper trays allows regular paper and envelopes to be loaded at same time. Photo printing is great, b&w and color. HOWEVER, specs say it will handle a standard business envelope, Com 10, in the paper tray. It will, but only with mods to the paper tray - otherwise, single feed from the back. Brother did not put in a "paper stop" for the #10 envelopes, so I had to fabricate one from two pieces of wood trim across the inside front of the #2 tray to hold the blank envelopes in place.
We purchased the MFC-J5720DW thinking it would print/scan/copy tabloid pages. The two trays for printing is a great option allowing one to be set as tabloid and one as letter sized. The feeder for scanning ONLY allows up to 8.5" wide paper which seems like a hidden restriction. It is an "Inkjet All-in-One with up to 11"x17" Printing and Duplex Scanning" which should read "Inkjet All-in-One with up to 11"x17" Printing and 8.5" wide Duplex Scanning". We would have even settled for a feeder from the front that would handle tabloid scanning with the glass only handling letter sized scanning. Brother should be not be advertising the scanning feature without including the size restriction.
Printing on plain paper is fine. However printing photos on glossy paper, not so good. Printer leaves roller marks on the glossy paper detracting big time on the picture. If you are printing a lot of photos, do not buy this machine. Everything else works just fine
this printer is clearly better than HP that i have owned; however the setup instructions were not straightforward which meant that i downloaded the wrong drivers which caused my printer to print extremely slow. i called customer service and they helpd me fix the problem.
I have owned other Brother products including printers and they have all worked fine. This product is a big disappointment. When you run a print job with multiple pages the paper shoots out with such force that the paper shoots over the paper stop (which is totally inadequate) and falls to the floor. Also, because of the poor way the tray receives paper on a multiple page job the paper does not come out evenly and pages go underneath previous pages or the pages go on the floor. I have to manually collate even a small print job of 4 or 5 pages. I am using good quality paper. I have worked with you Customer Service and they say there is no problem. I finally drilled holes in the plastic receiver tray and put a 90 degree metal angle support to hold the paper stop vertically. This stops the paper from going onto the floor but does not prevent the problems with collation. No more Brother products for me.
We use this printer in our small legal office. First, the feeder will not feed our documents head-first because of the holes at the top of the pages. We have resorted to scanning or copying pages bottom-first as a result. Next, the feeder takes multiple pages at a time. No, not all the time, but enough that we have to monitor the copier and review each copied document to check for all pages. Another difficulty that we experience with the product is that it's slow to "wake up." I can have several documents pending printing on my laptop and wait nearly 30 minutes for them to print. We specifically made this purchase because of the savings on ink cartridges (vs competitors) and because our previous Brother printer was so effective. While it gets the job done, it's a little disappointing that it's not as feckful.
I guess the excellent Brother black and white printer purchased some time ago led me to expect too much of this low-priced printer. The color quality is poor and there are few means to adjust it. The machine is slow and makes an awful squealing noise when it begins to print.
The first one I got wouldn't initialize - new out of the box and didn't work. Took nearly a week to get it replaced, and customer service was quite a bit lacking in terms of getting that unit replaced. I mean, c'mon it was brand new out of the box and didn't work, and their answer was 'well, you can get it fixed (I don't want a 'fixed' new unit, I want a WORKING new unit), and they were not fast about getting the replacement to me. Plus, they were very specific that the replacement would be printer only and that I should retain all the cables, etc. from the original one, but that wasn't the case at all. The second one works ok, but I'm still a bit disappointed. I'd had an HP for years and next time, I'll go back to HP. The Brother printer is loud and sounds like it's churning out the pages. If I'm printing while I'm on the phone, I have to step away from my desk because it's so loud. Plus color printing is really, really slow, and the colors are not distinct or sharp. The paper tray to receive the printed copies seems flimsy and cheap. I like the big holders for paper. Setup was easy. It's a handsome unit, although the plastic seems a little cheap. I want to like it, I just don't.
Setup was difficult. Printer is painfully slow in response when printing and frequently stops midstream when printing large files. Has to be turned off to clear the file. Now it prints pale, images midstream in a print job, then I reprint and it works fine. UGH! Unfortunately I threw the box away or I would be attempting to return this. I have been happy with other brother printers but this one was a mistake! I rarely write reviews but the emails requesting a review were annoyingly persistent! Hopefully this will stop the relentless email. I am now looking to buy a machine that actually works.
