Smoky, greasy hunk of metal makes my kitchen smell

My first impressions were this: It seems like a sturdy grill, and it appears to be of medium quality (as in, it will last at least a year under heavy use, or several years under moderate use). One thing that I found somewhat confusing was the need to ground the chassis externally, in addition to it being grounded via the 3-pronged plug. It was pretty intuitive for me, since I know a bit about electrical engineering. But the instructions were not clear at all about how to do it, and if I didn't know a lot about electrical appliances already, I'd have had trouble figuring that part out. Also, you should know that it is covered in grease when it arrives (the kind that is used in manufacturing, not the cooking kind). It will need a thorough wipe-down, and when I initially turned it on, I turned the temperature to the maximum setting. It began violently smoking from the inside, and the smoke smelled like either burnt synthetic grease, or melting plastic. Not sure which. The surface did seem to reach the desired temperature (after quite some time), so it does work. But there is significant setup involved, from grounding it (took about 10 minutes to figure out), wiping it down (took about 10 minutes to clean it to the point where no more grease could be removed), and letting whatever was causing the smoke to burn off (that took about 30 minutes, and the room was smoky for about 1 1/2 hours afterwards). It's worth noting I was using an outlet with the correct voltage, and I followed the directions to the letter. There was nothing more I could have done to prevent this thing from going up in smoke. There wasn't any fire inside (I checked), but there was clearly some sort of residue that needed to burn off before this thing could be used. And it smelled toxic. Thankfully, I have good ventilation, but I have asthma and I could have had a serious asthma attack if I hadn't been watching this thing carefully when I first heated it up. The smoke DID give me a headache though and I definitely don't feel great after breathing even a relatively small amount of it in. And that's not due to my normal asthma symptoms. If it weren't for the smoke, I would have given this at least 4 stars. I can overlook the grease - this isn't a consumer device after all. I can also overlook the grounding issues. That didn't cause me any real problems. But the fact that this thing was violently smoking for 30 minutes and left my kitchen smelling like a Chinese factory for HOURS is a pretty serious flaw in this product. I would fully recommend it if it weren't for that. But I do feel it deserves more than one star, because it WILL cook your food, and it WILL reach the desired temperatures; you'll just have to suffer for a few hours before that happens. Nobody wants their kitchen smelling like any kind of smoke, but I'd rather stand over a pan of burning olive oil and huff the fumes for an hour than smell the smoke that came out of this thing for 5 minutes. Don't buy this item.
