I used the lens only for test shots and it seems to work as it should. I have a 50mm f/1.8 first version and it is okay but the build quality of the f/1.4 is much better. I get good shutter speed in low light. Very happy with the purchase.
I have tried this lens on my Canon 7d digital and my Canon Elan 7 film camera with T-max p3200 film. I found that when the lens is open to f/1.4 the camera (7d) has a hard time finding sharp focus in dim light, and I have to switch to manual focus to obtain a sharp focus. That is more the problem of the camera focusing system than the lens. I like the fact that the lens can be used both in my film and digital cameras, since I enjoy both at various times. Also, I have had good luck with refurbished lenses from Canon, so I am confident this one will last.

I am extremely pleased with the Canon EF 50 mm F/1.4 USM Lens for use on the Rebel Xsi DSLR. The 50mm is my first fixed focus length (prime) lens. At this point I have used this lens primary indoors taking photos during Christmas parties and such. Being a fixed focus lens, composing the subject is a bit harder; you have to "zoom" with your feet. However, the image quality is superb; clearly better then the kit lens that came with the camera, which I liked. For me, the value of using the prime lens is being able to have the subject crisply in focus while intentionally having the background slightly to very blurred. Composing the image this way, brings the eye to the subject of the photo. If you do not know what a fixed focal length (prime) lens is, then do some research prior to purchasing one. However, once you are ready for a prime, the Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM lens is at an excellent price point. I am pleased with both the build and image quality.
This lens is great. It is amazingly fast (f/1.4!) And fairly inexpensive. Build quality is good, not L class, but will last a long time. At 1.4 it's not razor sharp, but approaching f/2 it starts getting sharper and at f/2.8 is as sharp or sharper than most other canon lenses including many of the L class. The range is perfect for portaits on a Rebel or any other crop sensor camera. You do have to watch carefully when you are focusing. I find it very difficult on manual to exactly focus because the depth of field is so narrow. I generally have to rely on the camera, which works great on the D40 but the Rebels don't always work so well focusing in dim light. All that being said, there is a cheaper canon f/1.8 50mm lens (known as the Plastic Fantastic)that is about 4 times cheaper, also has excellent optics, but horrible build quality. I'd recommend the 1.8 before getting the 1.4. The cheaper one is prone to breaking for no good reason, but again, you can buy 4 of them for the price of this one, and it works almost as well (autofocus is worse, just as sharp, but a lousy focusing ring for manual)

I got this to mount on my Canon dslr and film cameras. While it does capture nice photos in dim light, it does have trouble focussing, which might be the camera's problem. It is a solid well built lens, that does mostly what I'd like.
This produces a colorful sharp photo however is not as good as I expected in low light situations. With the large aperture (lower f stop) there is a very shallow DOF which may or may not be desirable.
